Job Description

We are currently seeking a

Substation Physical Layout Engineer - E3for our

Power Engineering & System Planninggroup in our

Phoenix, AZarea office. Responsibilities include preparation of physical and electrical substation project design and documents and support of the design of substation projects throughout the country; multi-office coordination, estimating and scheduling of activities related to substation design work; project design drawings including general arrangement plans, conduit, cabling, fencing, grounding and control building layouts as well as wiring diagrams and schematics and the contracts and specifications to support procurement and construction of these types of facilities.

Minimum Requirements:BSEE, 7+ years’ substation design and project engineering experience in the utility engineering industry or combination of education and experience; excellent communication, organizational and writing skills a must. Occasional travel/driving may be requested.

DescriptionResponsible for substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US. Main responsibilities include creating physical layout design deliverables. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution equipment upgrades to large transmission projects. Opportunities to advance into leadership roles are available.

Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesof a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Develop scopes of work, conceptual designs, and execution plans
  • Prepare engineering cost and man-hour estimates and schedules
  • Physical substation design including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material
  • Arrangement of substation structures, equipment and their foundations
  • Develop section views and other detail drawings that show how structures, equipment and bus work are installed
  • Ground grid design and equipment grounding
  • Load/system studies and coordination
  • Arc-flash studies
  • Prepare calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing
  • Coordinate design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.)
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel
  • Provide short term field support during construction

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited program
  • Minimum 7 years related experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience)
  • Must be a registered Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Proficiency with National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE / ANSI Standards
  • Knowledge of computer drafting tools such as AutoCAD preferred
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Capability of solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard approaches, techniques, procedures and criteria
