Job Summary:
The HRAC Mechanic is to perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, and installation and alteration of commercial and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities; perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.
Primary Duties:
Installs, services and repairs environmental-control systems in residences, department stores, office buildings and other commercial establishments
Utilizes knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting and structural layout
Mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications
Fabricates, assembles and installs ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment
Installs evaporator unit in chassis or in air-duct system, using hand tools
Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools
Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment. Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant
Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit. Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source
Installs air and water filters in completed installation
Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure
Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation
Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and-water solution
Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands
Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units, using electrician's hand tools and test equipment
May install, repair and service air conditioners, ranging from fifteen to twenty tons cooling capacity, in warehouses and small factory buildings

Education, Experience, Skills:
High school education or G.E.D equivalent preferred
Must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language
Valid Alaska Driver’s License
Must remain in good standing with the local Teamsters 959 Union
Relevant trade certification
5 years’ experience in one total or combination of either refrigeration, low pressure boilers, steam fitter or pipefitter
Must meet the requirements of an annual physical that will include pulmonary function testing and will require the occasional use of a respirator
Preferred
Associates degree in applied science with HVAC/R Technology
Hold EPA Universal refrigerant card
Direct Digital Controls (DDC) experience
Experience with small package boilers
Experience with commercial ventilation systems
Steam distribution and maintenance of system

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; carry materials and tools to work site up to 50lbs regularly and up to 75lbs occasionally. Sitting is less than 10% of the day.
Must meet the requirements of an annual physical that will include pulmonary function testing and will require the use of a respirator. This position requires manual dexterity sufficient to use hand tools. Must be able to work in tight/confined spaces and be familiar with proper personal protective equipment.

Job is performed primarily in multiple housing units, industrial facilities and outside in a variety of working conditions. Respirator use required.
Supervisory Responsibility
Will be required to provide direction and training to laborers and maintenance trades helpers.
Additional Qualifying Factors
As a condition of employment, will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base. Having reliable transportation to/from work is a necessity and must be used in able to obtain access to military installations.
