Job Title: Shrine Part-time Maintenance Worker
Average hours: 8-16 hours/week
Reports to: Shrine Director
Basic Function: Maintains buildings and campus
The Shrine of St. Therese is looking for an energetic, self-motivated part time maintenance person.
Duties and Responsibilities may include:
Performs general repairs, preventative maintenance to Shrine’s buildings, facilities and grounds, which can include: mechanical, carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, basic electrical work, cement and masonry work, janitorial, lawn, landscaping and trails maintenance.
Maintains and repairs facilities including Shrine’s historic and conventional structures.
Responsible for Snow removal, keeping Shrine open daily throughout the winter. Physical labor is necessary/required. To include plowing, sanding, snow-blowing, shoveling, removing snow from roofs, sidewalks, columbarium, parking lots and Shrine roads.
Performs routine maintenance of Shrine vehicles as necessary and keeps supervisor informed of any issues or problems requiring professional services.
May be assigned to assists contractors, contract workers and volunteers.
Will be available to do emergency repairs as needed.
Have broad knowledge of practices and intermediate skill is necessary to accomplish assigned work and responsibilities.
Will select and operate tools appropriate for assigned task.
Keeps Supervisor/Caretaker updated and informed of projects, assignments, and potential problems.
Continually performs repair or maintenance work in a safe manner, ensuring that activities do not endanger self, staff or visitors, or damage equipment.
Assists housekeeping and garden staff when necessary;
Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

You will be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays as needed.
You will be required to operate a Shrine vehicle as part of your duties; a valid Alaska driver's license is required.
Ability to learn, understand, and follow verbal and manual instructions, work independently and as a self-starter.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees, volunteers and Shrine visitors.
Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance on a daily basis.
Ability/willingness to learn and pass on to guests those areas of interest to visitors, such as Shrine history, Catholic faith, and information about gardens, columbarium
Drug testing may be required.
Ability to successfully pass a background check.
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills)
Educational Requirements: Standard high school diploma or possession of a General Educational Development Diploma.
Experience Requirements: Three years experience in facilities maintenance or building trades with basic electrical repair knowledge and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge/Ability/Skill Requirements: Ability to climb ladders, operate equipment and work outdoors. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades. Basic knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in building, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical trades. Ability to read blue prints and work from oral or written instruction.
Service Area
The National Shrine of St. Therese is comprised of Shrine Chapel (seating for 75), five rental cabins (capable of hosting 48 pilgrims), columbarium, gardens, trails and gift shop located on 46 wooded acres wooded on Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. Shrine pilgrims are locals, tourists, retreatants and families. The facilities are also used for group meetings, quilters and company team building events.
