Position Summary:

The Egan Library, University of Alaska Southeast, is seeking a part-time reference librarian to cover evening and weekend desk shifts. This position provides reference services for student, faculty, staff, and public users of an academic library utilizing online databases, the Internet, the Alaska Library Catalog, and print resources. Temporary Reference Librarians also participate in collection development and the creation of print and online materials to assist patrons with the use of library resources and services. Under the supervision of the Information Literacy Librarian, temporary reference librarians play an important role, maintaining full services during hours of operations. Professional training and development opportunities will be provided as needed. Duties:

Contribute to a variety of projects related to collection development, technical services, and/or web services according to individual interests and the needs of the department. Oversee student assistants and assist with circulation and building opening and closing procedures as needed. Provide specialized research assistance using library resources (online databases, the Alaska Library Catalog, and print materials) and technology assistance to UAS students, staff, faculty, and community members in-person and via phone, chat, and email.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement and think creatively to solve problems.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative.

Excellent customer service skills.

Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and effectively use Egan Library’s catalog and research databases.

Technology skills to include Google Suite, Word, internet searching, common office equipment, and technology troubleshooting. Able and willing to quickly learn new technologies and software. Able to teach library users of varying skills levels to effectively use various technologies.

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Reliable and dependable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

A Master’s degree (ALA accredited MLS or MLIS) in library/information studies is required; OR a Bachelor’s degree with four years of relevant work experience in a library or similar setting, working directly with patrons and demonstrating knowledge of library print and database resources, library service provisions, and technology troubleshooting abilities. Candidates with a combination of education and experience will be considered.

Experience providing reference, especially in an academic setting, is preferred.

Experience successfully working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds is preferred.

This is a Grade 78 part-time, casual temporary staff assignment and the incumbent will work no more than 14 hours per week. There are no benefits associated with this position.
