$26 - $34 hourly depending on experience. Sick and vacation time provided.
The Mendenhall Glacier Bookstore and Gift Shop is in the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. It’s run by nonprofit Discovery Southeast and the proceeds fund nature and science education in local elementary schools. We work in collaboration with the Forest Service and Tlingit and Haida.
In light of recent federal layoffs, Discovery Southeast is helping keep the building and area operating efficiently. The Staffing Lead will assess the staffing already available or offered, identify which roles need to be filled, conduct any necessary hiring and scheduling, and oversee the scheduling for the season. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
Communicating with businesses, agencies, and interested parties.
Hiring new staff.
Coordinating new staff, existing staff, and volunteers to meet the needs of the facility.
Filling in some of the staffing roles to support visitor’s experience.
This role involves creative problem solving, working collaboratively among a positive group of people, and supporting an important cause for our community. The location is gorgeous. Valued skills include:
Experience supervising/supporting staff and working constructively with others. Ability to take part in their hiring process.
Logistics and problem solving ability. To arrange staffing and other needs this position needs to navigate tourism schedules, agency availability, and random factors like weather.
Clear communication and ability to professionally relate with coworkers, local and national businesses, and local and national governments/agencies.
