Alaska Petroleum Distributing (APD) has been serving the North Pole and surrounding areas since 1981. With strong local brand recognition and family-owned company culture, APD has a balanced commercial and retail customer portfolio, delivering heating oil, gasoline, and diesel fuels. It is the largest fuel distributor in the interior. Recognizing its complementary services, including linehaul and truck maintenance capabilities, APD joined the NorthStar family of companies in 2019.

APD prioritizes environmental safety, crafting and constructing the first state-approved, double-walled fuel storage tanks. Alaska Petroleum has over 100 tanks of various sizes, which is an offered service to contractors throughout the state. In addition, APD handles oil spill contingency products, including pads and barrels.

JOB PURPOSE:

Responsible for all aspects of maintenance and the repairing of heavy and light equipment in and out of the shop. In the fleet department within APD, you will find a wide variety of equipment and machinery to maintain. This variety allows you the chance to expand your skill set and stay up to date on the latest technology. The mechanic will primarily work with their team to repair and maintain tractors and trailers used to transport petroleum products throughout the road system.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Analyze, diagnose, repair, rebuild and provide maintenance of heavy and light-duty equipment such as semi-trucks, tank trailers, loaders, and various pieces of heavy equipment.

- Dismantles, repairs, and reassembles equipment using hoists, hand tools, and pneumatic and electric tools.

- Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure accurate performance.

- Work on engines, structural systems, hydraulic and electrical systems, and subassemblies such as transmissions and differentials.

- Routinely perform safety and efficiency observations: shop, field, vehicle, and equipment.

- Perform duties in the shop or in the field as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

- Knowledge of diesel theory, hydraulics, electrical and pneumatic systems.

- Knowledge of heavy equipment and/or light duty equipment preventative maintenance.

- Knowledge of and experience in lubrication procedures for all types of heavy equipment common to heavy construction and oilfield service industries.

- Ability to maintain equipment maintenance records.

- Ability to give and receive oral safety warnings, instructions, and task assignments.

- Ability to read and understand schematic, blueprint/drawings, job descriptions, maintenance/safety/technical manuals, and safety/warning signs.

- Knowledge and use of diagnostic equipment and computers.

- Work as part of a team; communicate optimally with fellow workers and alternate.

- Ability to exhibit adherence to established safety policies and procedures.

- Provide direction and leadership to achieve the company's Core Values, Mission and Vision.

PHYSICAL DEMAND/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

- Must have the ability to stand, walk on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, sit, squat, kneel, reach through low and high ranges, and exhibit normal balance and coordination. These basic physical requirements are needed for the safe performance of the job in harsh environments with exposure to very cold temperatures and while wearing arctic gear.

- Sit and reach and range of motion evaluations.

- Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist with two hands.

- Lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulder with two hands.

- Carry 50 lbs. for 15 feet with two hands.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Class A Commercial Operator’s License (CDL) Preferred. Must have five current ASE Certifications and/or Automotive certifications and/or Medium/Heavy Truck certifications. Any Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications can be substituted for any one ASE certification. May also substitute AWS Welding Certification for one of the ASE certifications. Certifications must be kept current and renewed in a timely manner. 5 years proven track record required as a heavy diesel mechanic or proven experience required as a technician in another fleet or retail automotive environment, or completion of industry trade school (or college courses) related to automotive or diesel technology required. Must provide own tools.
