GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Chief Engineer oversees all plant maintenance activities and maintenance personnel. One of the key functions of this position is to operate, maintain, and repair the refrigeration system at our seafood processing plant in conformance with OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) regulations, EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP), and our company policy. This role is also responsible for all other plant operating systems including rolling stock, boiler, electrical, sprinklers, plumbing, and fire suppression systems. Balancing operational efficiencies, ensuring optimal refrigeration and plant production capabilities, minimizing down time, keeping employees and the environment safe, and meeting regulatory requirements are all critical aspects of the Chief Engineer position. Supports safety initiatives and ensures compliance among employees. Manages refrigeration and maintenance staff. Oversees internal and third-party M&R projects. This is a year-round, salaried exempt position and reports to the Plant Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates, maintains, and repairs all refrigeration system related machinery and components such as pumps and compressors. Ensures compliance with PSM and RMP. Documents all work performed.

Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and systems.

Supervises maintenance operations in the plant including but not limited to rolling stock, boiler, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler and fire suppression systems.

Monitors systems to prevent potential upsets and to maximize capabilities. Performs routine inspections and documents appropriately.

Order parts and supplies for plant equipment and systems.

Performs scheduled maintenance on equipment, buildings, and docks.

Assists with budgeting for plant alterations and expansions; monitors labor and materials.

Provides a continuous flow of product through the plant in cooperation with other plant departments.

Supports all company programs and initiatives (safety, environmental compliance, HR, etc).

Conducts training for staff and helps retain long-term employees by mentoring them to take on greater responsibility over time.

Develops long-term professional working relationships with employees, fishermen, local communities and regulatory agencies. Represents the company professionally and appropriately in interactions with others.

Maintains accurate, compliant and organized paper and electronic business records.

Supervises and manages the refrigeration and maintenance staff.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

5+ years working as a refrigeration mechanic in a food processing plant.

Universal EPA section 608 certification or willingness to obtain.

Experience following and maintaining PSM and RMP plans.

Working knowledge of refrigeration compressors – both electric and diesel driven.

Ability to read, write and speak intermediate English in order to communicate with other departments, respond to emergent situations, read and follow PSM and RMP plans, and to document all inspections and work performed on the system.

Basic electrical troubleshooting skills.

Ability and willingness to work in a seafood processing plant with inherent hazards such raw seafood products, elevated work areas, work over water, moving machinery, anhydrous ammonia, wet walking surfaces, noise, forklift traffic, etc. Work is often in inclement weather (cold, wind, rain, snow).

Capable of lifting 50 pounds individually. Capable of lifting heavier loads with coworkers and / or mechanical assistance.

Ability to work extended hours seven days a week during peak production periods and when M&R projects are underway at the plant.

Consistent and reliable in-person attendance is an essential function of this position.
