Laboratory Technician

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, this position performs laboratory work and CLIA-waived testing.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent. Certificate in Phlebotomy and/or Medical Assisting preferred.

Experience

One-year recent experience in direct customer service. Experience with performing CLIA waived testing, preferred. Cultural competence in working with diverse populations required.

Essential Functions:

1. Report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Remain at work for their entire work schedule.

2. Performs CLIA-waived tests (also known as point-of-care) for COVID-19 testing, strep, influenza and other waived tests. Responsible for the quality control testing that each test requires. Coordinates quality controls with Med Tech.

3. Administers questionnaire to patient.

4. Coaches patient on testing technique.

5. Provides patient with educational information flyer on test and condition being tested.

6. Understands and demonstrates proper specimen management:

Specimen collection

Specimen handling

Specimen processing in Abbott ID NOW or other testing assays

Specimen result documentation.

7. Cleans and disinfects touch points in facility environment twice a day, and cleans water pitchers and coffee pots weekly.

8. Transports tests to Alaska State Laboratory and LabCorp as needed.

9. Integrates work with other staff to ensure timely and accurate patient flow.

10. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities.

11. Complies with center’s policies and procedures.

12. Utilizes specialized office equipment.

13. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Basic computer skills.

Thorough knowledge of common office equipment (copier, fax, printer, etc.).

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

Ability to work under pressure.

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Position is based in the City of Fairbanks and may require travel within the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB). Valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance is required. Position may require working occasional evenings and weekends.
