Northern Geotechnical Engineering, Inc. - Terra Firma Testing (NGE-TFT) is currently accepting applications for an entry-level, full-time CAD/GIS Technician position within its geotechnical engineering department. NGE-TFT is an Alaska-based, employee-owned business providing geotechnical engineering and construction materials engineering & testing (CoMET) services to residential, commercial, governmental, tribal, and resource development projects across Alaska. Job Description:

NGE-TFT is seeking dynamic and self-motivated individuals with CAD and/or GIS experience supporting civil engineering design and/or geoscience disciplines. The position will support our geotechnical engineering department with any/all CAD and/or GIS-related tasks; including (but not limited to):

Preparing design drawings and report figures using both CAD and GIS platforms;

Building & maintaining a variety of GIS databases; and

Preparation of subsurface exploration logs.

Opportunities to gain experience in geotechnical engineering and/or CoMET disciplines will be available depending upon a candidate’s educational background, interest, talent and/or desire to do so.

The successful candidate’s duties will be conducted out of our office headquarters located in Anchorage, Alaska following a standard 40-hr workweek, however, flexible work schedules and/or remote workplace options are possible.

Representative Duties:

Performs tasks to create, edit or verify CAD drawings and related data.

Performs tasks to create or update CAD drawings from notes, sketches, drawings, data files, GPS, or verbal direction.

Creates GIS mapping databases and produces drawings and report figures using GIS.

Creates reports or extracts data using reporting tools or pre-defined queries.

Download, convert, and upload CAD/GIS data available from internal or external sources. Catalog, inventory, and consolidate CAD/GIS data, including metadata creation to department standards.

Assists with CAD/GIS software enhancements, upgrades, and configurations.

Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.

Education:

All candidates for the position must have (at a minimum) a high school diploma (or equivalent) plus completion of twenty (20) total college semester credit hours in CAD, GIS/geomatics, remote sensing, photogrammetry, computer science, natural science, surveying technology, engineering, urban planning, cartography, geography, or related fields. Minimum of nine (9) credit hours is required in CAD. A degree or formal CAD certification is preferred.

Experience:

Four (4) years of work experience where CAD is a major responsibility is required. Additional work experience where CAD is a major responsibility above the required four (4) years may be substituted for the required education; likewise, additional education in CAD may be substituted for up to two (2) years required work experience. For these purposes, one (1) year of experience is equivalent to six (6) college semester credit hours of education.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must have the ability to proficiently and independently operate CAD software packages to perform the representative duties.

Must have the ability to learn or do basic GIS editing. Some GIS experience or education preferred.

Must be detail and accuracy oriented.

Must have strong mathematical skills.

Should have an understanding of civil drafting disciplines, drawing standards, associated symbology and design concepts.

Ability to translate documentation to update CAD data and displays.

Knowledge of and ability to follow QA/QC procedures.

Ability to import and export data to various formats.

Ability to understand land-based coordinate systems.

Must exhibit excellent English verbal and written communication skills. Skilled in writing instructions, documentation and reports.

Perform scanner/plotter/printer operation and maintenance.

Ability to work in a team environment.

Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products

Character, integrity and a positive attitude are prerequisites.

Compensation:

Compensation will be based on the candidate’s experience and will be adjusted periodically based on performance, tenure, and inflation. However, starting pay for this position will typically range between $33-$38/hr (DOE). Successful candidates will be subject to a probationary employment period, after which company-provided benefits (paid leave/medical/dental/401k/profit sharing/etc.) will apply. Out-of-state relocation expenses will be considered.
