JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for ensuring support is provided to the primary teaching staff by assisting students in following the schedule and routine of the classroom to include other learning environments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintains a safe and positive environment for children.

2. Follows established guidelines related to the health and safety of children.

Follows the Municipality of Anchorage Child Care Codes, Office of Head Start Performance Standards, and Cook Inlet Native Head Start Policy and Procedures to insure compliance in all component areas.

3. Maintains a positive atmosphere for children and serves as a role model for parents through the implementation of the Head Start bus curriculum and use of appropriate discipline and guidance techniques such as redirection, acknowledging appropriate behavior, and setting age appropriate expectations that are clear and consistent.

Participates in age appropriate activities and interaction with children.

4. Attends staff meetings, training sessions, and participates in planning and problem solving sessions as needed.

5. Communicate effectively with program staff and parents.

6. Assists in maintaining files and records.

7. Ability to work in a team atmosphere.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Must be familiar with Alaska Native/American Indian heritage and culture and must be able to serve and effectively communicate with the children and families enrolled in the CINHS program Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to accurately follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Ability to gain knowledge about early childhood through attendance at workshops and training sessions.

Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards in accordance to the Municipality of Anchorage, Office of Head Start Regulations and Cook Inlet Native Head Start Policy and Procedure.

Flexibility with respect to time and days able to work, as well as work tasks.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. First Aid and CPR certification may be required.

Must successfully complete TB and hepatitis screening exams and any required vaccinations.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check as required by state and federal law.

Preferred knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physically and mentally capable of working with young children and their families, including lifting up to 50 lbs. intermittently, standing for long periods of time, able to stoop and bend to allow for sanitizing of classroom toys and equipment, physical work such as filling buckets with water, pulling mop buckets, vacuuming, stacking chairs, moving tables, filling the sand and water tables, etc. Potential for mechanical hazards typically associated with the operation of a motor vehicle (i.e. driving in bad weather and icy road conditions) while being responsible for the safety and behavior of passengers. Frequent work outside the building, which may expose the worker to sudden temperature changes and/or extreme weather conditions.
