POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant supports the financial operations of the organization by maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with tribal, federal, and organizational accounting standards. This position plays a key role in supporting grant and fund accounting, assisting in audits, and managing various functions in alignment with tribal governance and federal regulations.

DESCRIPTON OF DUTIES:

The successful candidate will:

Perform monthly reconciliations of Knik Tribe’s primary bank and investment accounts, as well as subsidiary bank accounts, and prepare corresponding financial reports.

Support the month-end close process by researching discrepancies, preparing and correcting journal entries, and generating required accrual entries.

Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely monthly and quarterly financial statements.

Prepare quarterly and annual tax returns for the corporate entity and its subsidiaries.

Support the annual financial audit process, including preparation of closing entries, reconciliation of general ledger accounts, and drafting of financial statements.

Assist with the maintenance of the chart of accounts, and conduct account analysis and reconciliations as necessary.

Assist with bi-weekly payroll and monthly council stipend processing, ensuring accurate calculation of wages, deductions, and benefits, and verifying compliance with organizational policies and applicable labor laws, Support the preparation, reconciliation, and timely submission of federal, state, and local payroll tax filings, including withholding, unemployment, and other required payroll-related taxes.

Manage weekly ACH payment processing.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Utilize accounting software, spreadsheets, and other related financial tools to complete tasks efficiently and accurately.

Prepare financial reports to support grant management activities.

Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Thorough understanding of financial reporting principles applicable to both corporate and nonprofit organizations.

Knowledge of federal and state payroll tax reporting requirements, including Forms 941-SUTA, W-2, W-3, 1096, and 1099.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); experiences with SAGE MIP Fund Accounting software strongly preferred.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a diverse and multicultural workforce, including tribal communities.

Proven ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and handle sensitive financial and personnel information with integrity.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey financial information clearly and effectively.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.

Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently with minimal supervision.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum three (3) years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, preferably in non-profit, tribal organization, or government-funded environment.

Demonstrated proficiency in accounting software and financial systems; SAGE MIP Fund Accounting experience preferred.

Familiarity with fund accounting principles and compliance with federal grants regulations (e.g., Uniform Guidance).

Familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and standard financial reporting practices.

Experience working with tribal leadership, council members, and funding agencies is highly desirable.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Knowledge and experience of Knik Tribe’s Service Area and Knik Tribe’s Programs.

Adequate understanding of all Microsoft Office Applications.

Capable of basic maintenance for general office equipment and multi-line phone systems.

Must pass a criminal background check and be free of barrier crimes.

Clean driving record.

Knowledge and application of professional and ethical conduct as guided by Knik Tribal Council Personnel Manual Section 8.1.

NATIVE PREFERENCE STATEMENT: Pursuant to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 (PL 93-638) and as further guided by Knik Tribe Native Preference Policy 6.120, Knik Tribe maintains preference in all phases of employment for Alaska Native, American Indian (AN/AI) and Native Hawaiian people, including direct lineal descendants and foster or traditionally adopted children. Also included are non-Native head of household member of Native families, which includes foster or traditionally adopted Native children.

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Salary: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 DOE/E. Plus full benefits: Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid leave and holidays, and retirement plan with matching contributions.
