OverviewThe Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.ResponsibilitiesThe Computing, Analytics, and Modeling Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a post-Masters research associate to support the development of interdisciplinary data resources and data analytics capabilities that will advance DOE Office of Science’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research mission science.Group Description: The Environmental Molecular Sciences Division’s (EMSD’s) new Computing, Analytics, and Modeling (CAM) group focuses on advancing the science of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user facility and the mission science of its sponsor, the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) mission, by delivering world-class capabilities and developments in computational science, data analytics and transformations, and modeling sciences. The group, which reports to the CAM Group Leader, works with researchers and staff in EMSL’s other two science areas (Environmental Transformations and Interactions, or ETI, and Functional and Systems Biology, FSB) to deliver on EMSL’s three strategic science objectives: DigiPhen, MONet, and Modeling and Data Sciences. Due to the centrality of data and computing infrastructure systems in the group’s work, CAM also works closely with the group led by EMSL’s Chief Data Officer. The CAM group has two teams: Systems Modeling, and Data Transformations.As a post-Masters research associate in the Computing, Analytics, and Modeling group, you will be responsible for advancing EMSL’s MONet (Molecular Observation Network) strategic science objective and its Modeling and Data Science Capability (MDS) strategic science objective, through multiple efforts including but not limited to the following

Developing software infrastructure supporting workflows to analyze genomic and metagenomic data.

Aiding in the development of data management systems and workflows for the overall MONet user experience including data portals and data handling.

Aiding in the development of new modeling and data visualization applications to gain deeper insights into data taken as part of the MONet effort.

Integrating new modeling and data visualization applications into the MONet data ecosystem including data models, user portals, etc.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Background in bioinformatics, genomics, or related field

Knowledge of environmental science, computer science, and metabolomics

Expertise with mass-spectrometry (MS) data and metadata, including key public resources (e.g. NCBI PubChem) and database usage (SQL, PostgreSQL, and use of RESTful APIs)

Experience with Linux-based software development for scientific applications (bash, Python, R, C), scientific computing libraries and standards (e.g. JSON, ggplot2, Pandas, Numpy, SciPy, SciKit) as well as basic web standard tools (e.g. HTML and Javascript, Flask)

Experience integrating scientific software components and working with operations teams for deployment, e.g. CI/CD and GitLab/GitHub, as well as cloud (Kubernetes, Azure/GCP, etc).

Experience working in software development and support on large, distributed teams

Demonstrated verbal and written communications skills including the ability to communicate efficiently with experimentalists and general audiences

Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse, interdisciplinary, distributed research teams

Demonstrated organizational skills that include prioritizing work in dynamic environments, delivering results on-time and on-budget, and creating effective and agile research plans.
