Job Title: Caregiver for Male Client with ALS
Location: Foley, AL
Position Type: Flexible — Part-Time, Full-Time, or Live-In
About the Position:
We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and experienced caregiver to support a 54-year-old male living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). The client weighs approximately 175 lbs and requires assistance with daily living activities and health-related tasks. This position is ideal for someone who is comfortable with physical caregiving duties and is committed to maintaining a high standard of care.
The client lives with his wife, three older children, and three younger children. The older children all work part time with varying hours but do assist when available and as needed; otherwise, his wife is the primary caregiver. The client’s needs are continuing to grow and additional outside assistance would be wonderful help to the family.
Key Responsibilities:
Safe Transfer Assistance: Support the client with safe transfers (bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to commode, etc.) using appropriate techniques and/or equipment.
Bladder and Bowel Management: Assist with catheter care, incontinence care, and bowel programs (not needed at this time)
Personal Hygiene: Aid with bathing, grooming, dressing, oral care, and toileting as needed
Mobility Assistance: Help with repositioning, stretching, and range of motion exercises under guidance as needed
Health Monitoring: Observe and report any changes in condition; assist with medication reminders and health-related tasks as directed by medical professionals.
Nutrition and Hydration: Assist with meal prep
Companionship and Emotional Support: Provide social interaction, emotional reassurance, and respect for the client's dignity and independence.
Qualifications:
Prior experience with ALS, spinal cord injury, or similar mobility/neurological conditions preferred but not required
Ability to safely lift and transfer 175 lbs with assistance and assistive devices
Experience with bladder and bowel care (training can be provided)
CPR/First Aid certification preferred
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to follow detailed and evolving care instructions
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred (if not live-in)
Schedule:
Negotiable. Options include:
Part-Time (weekday, night, and/or weekend shifts)
Full-Time (likely to include some night shifts)
Live-In (private bedroom with furniture provided; shared bathroom and common areas)
Compensation:
Based on experience, availability, and role scope (hourly or salaried for live-in).
