Art Teachers & Assistants – Mobile, AL – OCTOBER 1, 2025 Start

www.doylepottery.com is partnering with the City of Mobile to bring hand-building ceramics and diverse art classes to 15 community centers across Mobile County! Doyle Pottery, Mobile’s premier ceramics studio at 1258 Druid Drive, led by R. Doyle Hickman II with nearly 30 years of experience, is hiring 2 Art Teachers (full-time, 30-40 hours/week) and 3 Art Assistants (part-time, variable hours). Join our team to inspire 98% adult learners (no children under 12) and shape Mobile’s vibrant art scene, starting OCTOBER 1, 2025. With high demand for ceramics and art classes, especially in schools, this is a unique opportunity to grow with us!

Market Demand Overview:

Mobile County’s art scene thrives, with 7,261 adults (5% of 145,225) and 5,198 students (10% of 51,979) potentially interested in classes, plus 2,555 unique yearly searchers from 70 daily ceramics class searches. The City of Mobile’s 15 community centers (e.g., Dotch, Figures, Connie Hudson) serve diverse adult populations, while Mobile County’s 92 public schools and 13 private schools, backed by Amp Up Arts, show strong demand for ceramics and visual arts, supporting our expansion and assistants’ training to teach.

Art Teachers (2 Positions):

- Pay: $40/hour for classes, $20/hour for private lessons, plus bonuses ($50-$200 per class, doubled to $100-$400 at 24+ students, boosting pay to $80/hour at max capacity), daily cash (minus taxes, W-2 reported) unless fixed salary after 3 months, no overtime. Pay cut ($20-$30/hour) for classes below 8 students to add hours if needed.

- Duties:

- Co-teach hand-building ceramics and 5 other art classes (e.g., drawing, painting, photography) for 8-24+ students (98% adults, no children under 12, mostly beginners, 1-2 hour classes) with an assistant in a duo format at 5 unique Mobile County community centers weekly (one per day, 15 total centers across 3 teachers, including R. Doyle Hickman II). Demonstrate hand-building (e.g., pinch pots, coil vases, slab boxes), adapting to adult learners using BA/BFA expertise.

- Create 6-8 week lesson plans for hand-building ceramics and 5 other art classes, covering techniques (e.g., coiling, glazing for ceramics; shading for drawing), tailored to beginners, ensuring 8-student minimum to meet revenue needs.

- Manage electric kiln operations (loading, firing to cone 6, unloading) at Doyle Pottery (1258 Druid Drive) for up to 24+ students’ work across 5 centers.

- Transport up to 24 student pieces per ceramics class from centers to Doyle Pottery’s kiln in a reliable vehicle, ensuring safe delivery of greenware/bisqueware.

- Teach private lessons ($20/hour) at Doyle’s 4-person studio upon acceptance to showcase hand-building and art expertise (e.g., ceramics, painting samples), preparing for October 1, 2025.

- Mentor adult students in duo-taught classes, troubleshooting issues (e.g., cracking clay, uneven painting) with patience, fostering creativity.

- Market classes via social media (e.g., X, Instagram), flyers, or networks (e.g., Mobile Arts Council, schools) to ensure 8-student minimum, earning bonuses to free art time.

- Collaborate with R. Doyle Hickman II to expand classes across 15 centers and promote doylepotterygallery.com, showcasing work at gallery events.

- Engage adult groups with strong people skills, building an inclusive studio culture.

- Use Doyle’s 4-person studio at 1258 Druid Drive for personal art projects, with access to kilns and materials.

- Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Art, Fine Arts, Ceramics, or related field (BA or BFA); no teaching degree required. Strong hand-building and art skills; teaching experience preferred. Reliable vehicle to transport 24 ceramic items. Excellent communication and people skills.

- Perks: Studio access for personal art, bonuses for large classes, private lessons for immediate work, fixed salary option after 3 months, more hours via school partnerships.

- Prepare materials (mix/wedge clay, glazes) and set up workstations for up to 24+ students across 5 centers.
