This position is located in Birmingham, AL.
Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).
This position may require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.
Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate currently resides outside a reasonable commuting distance.
POSITION SUMMARYGas Supply and Energy Trading is responsible for supplying fuel to the Southern Company natural gas-fired fleet, representing approximately 25,000 MW of electric generating capacity in the Southern core territory. The scheduling analyst works closely with the gas traders, unit commitment, and real-time operations to provide reliable fuel deliveries while minimizing cost to customers. The scheduling analyst’s primary responsibility is scheduling natural gas transactions to pipelines, tracking all activity in the gas management system, and providing ad hoc analysis and support. The job is located on the Southern Company trading floor in Birmingham, Alabama and will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to gain insight across a broad area of the business including natural gas markets, pipeline scheduling, asset optimization, fleet operations, and power trading.PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Nominate and confirm scheduled quantities of natural gas to support electric generation requirements.
Monitor natural gas flow on interstate pipelines comparing scheduled volume to actual flow.
Develop a thorough understanding of pipeline operations and tariffs.
Identify and anticipate key constraint points and other scheduling limitations
Understand firmness of the service provided under the tariff, considering the contract type, pipeline, and specific receipt and delivery points.
Troubleshoot and present creative solutions to pipeline issues that restrict gas flow.
Maintain and verify the accuracy of scheduling data, including fuel retention percentages and transportation rates, in internal gas management system for reporting and accounting purposes.
Develop the knowledge and ability required to back-up traders and other scheduling analysts as needed, seeking the optimal approach for reliability and cost.
Participate in weekend/holiday coverage rotation.
Build and maintain strong working relationships both internally and externally in support of the primary job responsibilities identified above.
Occasional after-hours work may be required.
Provide analytical support for trading and scheduling activities; develop tools to optimize supply and transportation assets.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONSEducation:
BS/BA degree in a course of study that demonstrates strong analytical and technical skills such as Engineering, Accounting, Operations Management, Economics, Business Analytics, Supply Chain/Logistics, etc.
Comfort with detailed work in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Ability to think critically, strategically, and analytically.
Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships.
Must be a team player capable of multi-tasking.
Experience:
Proficiency with standard analytical and business software such as Microsoft Office is required.
Experience with VBA, SQL, or other programming languages is a plus.
