    Summary

    The Recreation Therapy Supervisor is responsible for the administration, management and supervision of the Recreation Therapy Program throughout the Sheridan VA Health Care System. Oversight of the program includes direct supervision of all recreation staff to include Recreation Therapists, Recreation Therapy Assistants, and Recreation Assistants.

    Responsibilities

    • Evaluation, performance appraisal and development of performance standards for Staff Recreation Therapists
    • Recruits qualified staff.
    • Counsels subordinates and initiates disciplinary actions.
    • Arranges clinical coverage for Recreation staff in order to limit the disruption of care.
    • Identifies program needs and explains those needs to the appropriate individuals.
    • Constructs evidence-based recreation therapy interventions for treating patients with complex medical or mental health issues.
    • Serves with independent judgment to administer and interpret recreation therapy assessments.
    • Utilizes clinical competencies to develop unconventional assessment and interview approaches to effectively elicit information.
    • Conducts, analyzes, interprets and reports assessment date based upon functional domains (cognitive, sensory, social, affective, physical and leisure.
    • Develops individualized treatment plans with measurable therapeutic goals and objectives including scope, duration, and treatment.
    • Determines the effectiveness of protocols, modalities, and programs for targeted groups.

    Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/11/2019.Basic Requirements:

    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

    • Education: A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). OR

    • A Bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived.

    Certification: Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC.

    Grade Determinations:GS-12: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion of two years of progressively complex experience, which includes one year equivalent to the next lower grade directly related to the position being filled ANDCertification: Additional certification in a specialty treatment area in recreation therapy, such as, but not limited to: Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Developmental Disabilities, Behavioral Health, Community Inclusion Service, Aquatic Exercise Therapy/Aquatic Therapy, Adapted Sports, Assisted Technology, Social Skills,etc., or in a directly related field such as, but not limited to: acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dementia, dialectical behavioral therapy, gambling disorder, motivational interviewing, and/or wellness recovery action plan facilitator. (This must be included in your application package)

    Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Heavy lifting up to 45 lbs; Heavy Carrying 45 lbs and over; straight pulling up to 4 hours; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hand required. Walking up to 8 hours; standing up to 8 hours Repeated bending up to 8 hour; both legs required;. Correctable vision 20/40 in one eye; ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; hearing aid permitted.

    Work Environment: The position may at times involve exposure to a work environment that may include intermittent excessive noise, dust, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around moving objects or vehicles. The incumbent may also be exposed to infective patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
