Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Responsibilities

The Hospitalist/MOD Staff Physician is a direct patient care position and is responsible for carrying out operations of the Hospitalist Section of the Medicine Service.Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Admits and manages inpatients with medical illnesses. This includes admitting patients and performing histories and physical examinations; rounding on patients and writing progress notes; discharge planning and timely completion of discharge summaries. Admits and manages (with assistance of Psychiatrist on Call, as needed) mental health/residential patients.
  • Works closely with specialists, primary care, and Urgent Care Providers to ensure that patients receive continuous high-quality care.
  • Coordinates the transfer of patients with other hospitals if necessary.
  • Provides inpatient internal medicine consultations to other services, including Mental Health
  • Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
  • Communicates with incoming and off going Hospitalists to ensure continuity of care.
  • Attends Medical Service Staff meetings as assigned.
  • Serves on Medical Staff committees as assigned.
  • Completes all medical records (including discharge summaries) in accordance with Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
  • Ability to participate in the teaching of medical residents and students, as requested.
  • Ability to perform minor bedside procedures
  • The Hospitalist will support the safety, occupational health, and fire protection program by the application of approved standards, regulations, practices and work methods.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/05/2021.Basic Requirements:

    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.
    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, kneeling, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

    Applicant must be willing to undergo a pre-employment physical that may involve a drug screening test.

    Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) has been authorized; but, not guaranteed for this position.-You must first apply for EDRP within four (4) months of this appointment. HR will assist you in completing the packet for submission but please don't wait until the last minute.-Should EDRP be approved you will be required to remain in this HR Smart Position Number for the term of the EDRP approval.-Should you decide to apply for a different position within that period, and are selected/reassigned, your EDRP authorization will be stopped.(EDRP is paid out every 12 months as a reimbursement to amounts you have paid to an institution within the preceding 12 months. It is not calculated on a monthly basis nor pro-rated but as a lump sum.
