Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (Part Time)

This position is still at the proposal stage and is awaiting award.This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program.  The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below: International SOS is looking for an individual who is an experienced Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CTPA) to provide care for VA members and their families. The physician's assistant in cardiothoracic surgery is responsible to provide comprehensive surgical assistance, conduct patient assessments, and support pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic procedures. They collaborate closely with surgeons and healthcare teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes and effective management of surgical protocols.Key ResponsibilitiesCover the range of cardiothoracic services as would be provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility and the standard of care shall be of a quality, meeting or exceeding current recognized national standards. Care shall be appropriately documented in medical records in accordance with standard commercial practice and guidelines established by VHA Handbook. Assist in the Operating Room (OR) as the first or second surgical assistant to the resident or staff physician, helping to open and close all incisions pertinent to CT surgery, harvesting veins, and other duties as directed within defined scope of practice. In an emergency, pending arrival of a physician, the CTPA may perform emergency care within their Scope of Practice and according to the Milwaukee VAMC policies and procedures. The CTPA may perform any procedure; administer or order any medications that would normally be ordered; order any emergency resuscitative drugs required during an attempted Code procedure until a senior staff physician or resident physician is present.  Perform Basic Life Support to include defibrillation and cardioversion. Document and sign all patient notes within 4 hours of the encounter.  Comply with appropriate and applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Examples include narcotic control and use, personnel policies, infection control, and medical records.  Be physically present in the facility to perform the required services as specified in this task order.  Mechanisms must be in-place to provide notification of test results for patients receiving care in accordance with VHA Directive. Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care.  Make every effort to prevent medication errors, falls, and patient injury caused by acts of commission or omission in the delivery of care.  This list is non-exhaustive, and the role holder may be required to undertake additional duties that are not specifically listed above.
