Position:Custodian/Bus DriverHourly: $21.45 - $26.30Year-round schedule - 260 Work Days (8 hours per day)

General Summary

Custodian / Bus Driver was established for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; monitors the building for damage, participates and/or recommends preventive maintenance measures to supervisor; and provides support within the student transportation services area with specific responsibilities for transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses. This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: The functions of the position apply primarily to custodial duties and bus driving. However, this position provides backup and general assistance as needed to the grounds and general maintenance team.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

Previous custodial / janitorial experience preferred

Possess a valid class “B” WA state driver’s license w/ passenger, school bus, and air brake endorsements preferred or ability to obtain within 90 days of hiring

Proven ability to work independently

Physical ability to perform required duties

Record of dependability, flexibility and regular attendance.

Possess strong work ethic

Ability to respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Cleans facility and related areas (e.g. classrooms, restrooms, common areas, bus garage, gymnasium, locker rooms, offices, storage, buses, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff, and public.

Utilizes appropriate methods, materials, and practices used in building cleaning and sanitization work, including the proper use and care of mops, brooms, scrubbing brushes, waxing machines, and related equipment; maintains a working knowledge of the safe efficient procedures for operating required tools of the job.

Inspects facility and equipment (e.g. bathrooms, common areas, storage rooms, fixtures, vacuums, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, identifying necessary repairs, and reporting deficits to supervisor to assist in providing an ongoing program of preventative maintenance.

Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase for the purpose of maintaining the inventory of district owned hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials and supplies.

Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.

Assists grounds and general maintenance with the removal of hazards (e.g. snow and ice) for the purpose of providing safety and access for students, staff, and general public.

Assist with grounds and general maintenance in district during scheduled breaks, after major incidents/failures that may impact students, staff, and/or the general public, or as a backup as necessary.

Assists grounds and general maintenance personnel as required for the purpose of ensuring an effective and efficient work environment.

Other duties as assigned.

Expectations for Continued Employment:

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory outcome of a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau Investigation fingerprint screening examination and background check.

Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours.

Comply with all District policies and operational procedures.

Maintain punctuality and regular attendance.

Complete SafeSchool’s online training in accordance with the Union Gap School District policy

Possess a valid CPR and First Aid Card

Pass DOT physical exam every 2 years

Maintain valid licenses & certifications referenced above

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting of up to 50lbs, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 15% sitting, 45% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions both hot and cold with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
