Mechanic Apprentice Trainee

Join our team at Chelan County Public Utility District. As one of the largest hydroelectric generating utilities in the Northwest, our mission at Chelan PUD is to improve the quality of life for the thousands of people who call our pristine desert and mountain community home.

Overview

Under the direction of the Mechanical Superintendent or senior level Mechanics, assists with construction, repair and maintenance of hydro generation plant equipment or other auxiliary equipment. This is an entry-level position in the District's Generation Mechanic job series. Successful incumbents continuously demonstrating Mechanic aptitude typically enter into the Mechanic Apprentice program within 12 months.

Responsibilities

- Assist with basic mechanical equipment testing, repair and maintenance tasks. Provide labor support as directed.

- Assist with basic construction and fabrication of structures or equipment.

- Operate shop tools and heavy equipment as needed under direct supervision.

- Maintain regular and predictable attendance: Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Comply with District policies. Complete all required training. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

- As an essential function, drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District.

Qualifications

Education

Equivalent experience (year for year) may substitute for required education.

- Two years college education, two years trade school with technical emphasis, or comparable work history desired.

Experience

- Typically requires six (6) months' work history demonstrating mechanical aptitude and ability to perform physically demanding work required

Licenses and Certifications

- Valid Driver's License at hire and WA Driver's License within 30 days of hire required

- CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation with Valid First Aid Card required

Skills and Abilities

A fully skilled incumbent will have the following knowledge skills & abilities:

- Requires strong ability and desire to train through the apprenticeship program for a Journey-level position as a Generation Mechanic.

- Must meet established departmental standards in the District’s physical ability test.

- Requires good interpersonal skills and ability to get along with others

- Must possess basic record keeping maintenance skills.

- Candidates with the ability to obtain within six months a Commercial Driver’s license Class A, with valid medical card, airbrake restriction removed are preferred.

- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Maximo (required) Asset Management, Maintenance, Inventory and Order Processing software; Microsoft Excel (preferred) Spreadsheet software; Microsoft Word (preferred); and printers.

- Proper use and training of the necessary tools and equipment is required:

- Hand tools (hammer, saw, shovel screwdriver, wrench, pliers, etc.)

- Power tools (drill, impact wrench, jack hammer, grinder, etc.)

- Vehicles (cars, trucks, forklifts, etc.)

- Welding equipment

- Machine shop tools (metal shear, metal brake, lathe, iron worker /piranha, etc.)

- Other related tools and equipment

- Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.

- Drives or operates motorized vehicles for purposes of transporting passengers, including other employees (occasional driving of a District passenger vehicle is not a Safety Sensitive job duty)

- Drives or operates heavy machinery, or uses rotating or heavy equipment, or power machines or tools in the vicinity of the public or other employees

- Works with, in, on, or near distribution or transmission lines or equipment in a manner that can impact the safe flow or distribution of electricity or water, or otherwise create imminent harm to the public or other employees, such as flooding, fire or explosions
