Fishway Attendant - Seasonal

Overview

Operate all fish passage facilities and equipment associated with the District's dams in accordance with established operational criteria. Perform regular inspections and make adjustments necessary to assure maximum fish passage efficiency at all times. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of fish facilities to maintain efficiency and clean fish passage systems and related facilities. Assist the District's Fish and Wildlife personnel with operational tasks supporting special studies or research activities. Perform operator duties as needed at Dryden and Entiat canals and Tumwater dam. May perform duties as needed at District Juvenile Fish Bypass facilities. This is a seasonal position that may be assigned to work rotating shifts.

Responsibilities

- Perform all duties associated with adult fish ladder operations, cleaning debris from intakes, regulating passage water levels, removing and installing Rocky Reach orifice gate stop logs, recording compliance report information and identifying maintenance needs within work areas. Assist District Fish and Wildlife personnel with operational tasks, as needed, supporting special studies or research activities.

- Perform duties as Bypass Operator, which typically begins March 15 and goes to August 31. Operate bypass to meet established criteria, maintain water level and flows, remove debris from dewatering areas and identify maintenance issues.

- Perform operations (as needed) at Dryden and Entiat canals and Tumwater dam. Clean debris from intakes, regulate water way as needed.

- Assist in the development of bypass operational procedures and documentation of spare parts inventory.

- Provide generation support services such as greasing, household repairs and providing assistance to operation and maintenance crews.

- Maintain regular and predictable attendance: Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Comply with District policies. Complete all required training. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

- As an essential function, drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District.

Qualifications

Education

Equivalent experience (year for year) may substitute for required education.

- No post-secondary education required.

Experience

- Six (6) months construction or utility worker experience required.

- Experience working with Juvenile Fish Bypass and/or adult ladder operations for two seasons desired.

CONTRACT RATE

$24.61 - per hour

JOB DURATION

Seasonal positions start approximately the beginning of February and lasts to approximately the beginning or middle of December. Employees work 12 hours per shift on a rotating schedule that includes days, nights and weekends.

Example One-Month Rotating Shift Schedule:

Days 1-4: 12-hour night shifts

Days 5-7: Off

Days 8-10: 12-hour day shifts

Day 11: Off

Days 12-14: 12-hour night shifts

Days 15-17: Off

Days 18-21: 12-hour day shifts

Days 22-28: Off

Licenses and Certifications

- Valid Driver's License at hire and WA Driver's License within 30 days of hire required.

- CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation with Valid First Aid Card within 60 days required.

- Qualified Rigger Certification within 60 days required.

Skills and Abilities

A fully skilled incumbent will have the following knowledge skills & abilities:

- Knowledge of District safety codes.

- Working knowledge of proper operation of fish passage tools and equipment.

- Knowledge of fish passage facilities and standard maintenance practices

- Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations using staff gauge and hydraulic data.

- Strong communication skills in both written and verbal form.

- Requires ability to operate PLC’s (Programable Logic Controllers), pump control panels, automated hydraulic controlled systems, weir gates and valves including the Rocky Reach tailrace gantry crane (auxiliary hoist).

- Ability to read and record water surface elevations and interpret rating tables.

- Requires good interpersonal skills and ability to get along with others

- Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work independently.

- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Internet Explorer; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Word; Microsoft Outlook; PeopleSoft HRIS; Maximo Asset Management & Maintenance systems; Maximo Order Processing; general office equipment and heavy equipment. An individual should also have knowledge of and be able to properly and safely use power equipment including the Rocky Reach tailrace gantry crane (auxiliary hoist), regulating controls and general office equipment including telephones, handheld radios, and printers.

- Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

A valid driver's license is required for this position (verified upon hire). A valid Washington State driver's license is required within 30 days of employment.
