Position Summary:

The mission of Pierce College is to create quality educational opportunities to a diverse community of learners to thrive in an evolving world. The Pierce College District is committed to being an anti-racist institution; to truly be anti-racist we must work deliberately to eliminate barriers that have prevented the most promising and capable students from entering and thriving in college. We work to ensure that every student in the Pierce College District feels valued, respected, and inspired to achieve their goals. We provide a brave space for Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ/QTPOC students, students with disabilities, and all students and staff to seek refuge, and an opportunity for them to cultivate their strengths, intelligence, resilience, and creativity.

Working under general supervision, the Makerspace Specialist will plan, organize, direct, and coordinate operations of the Fab Lab, providing a space that will be safe and welcoming for all students. The Makerspace Specialist will employ their creativity and intellectual curiosity to develop novel uses of resources to inspire and support student success. The Makerspace Specialist will oversee the District Makerspaces, including the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) and Ideation Studio, and Fort Steilacoom Makerspace, spaces designed to encourage and facilitate the practical application of STEAM principles in student’s everyday life. The FabLab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology oriented around STEAM principles and DIY skill building. The Ideation Studio is a versatile space envisioned as a comfortable and well equipped ‘third place’ for students to gather for study, brainstorming, social events, and leisure activities. The Fort Steilacoom Makerspace is a well-equipped satellite Makerspace that extends Makerspaces services across the district.

This position actively supports and engages in Pierce College’s goals for diversity and inclusion to provide access for our diverse community of learners and to promote the goal of becoming an anti-racist institution. This position requires regular and consistent attendance, and reports directly to the Computer Labs & Student Technology Assistance Team Manager.
