Visiting Artist or Production Worker: Old school Wood Bending Shop

Washington, Seattle-tacoma
Aplica ya

Immediately available position. Flexible position for visiting artist, or part time/full time production assistant/creative type. The visiting artist position is designed for you to put in about 32 hours per week on our interesting limited production wood bending fabrications. Then spend evenings and long weekends working out your ideas in our production studio with our materials. As a production assistant, you can work 40 hour weeks (or less), plus overtime potential.

Pure Timber is a small wood shop that focuses on unusually large bent wood projects in a large studio setting. We are tiny, but there is nothing else like this business model in a wood shop. A bit old world craft, and a bit science project. We are now building curved bentwood benches for the new Lucas museum in Los Angeles. Build them, visit them, sit in them.

You should be a maker, used to working with your hands and making decisions on the fly. I don't mind if your creative pursuits are fine art or more production based. If you sew, knit, paint, draw, saw or sand, you probably are one of those maker types. We do have full size wood shop tools and it helps to know your way around them, but it can be learned on the fly too. Knowing math helps. It is surprising in woodwork how often we are talking about a thousandth of an inch.

Many pictures of our work at puretimber.com . Also look at renovo.bike . Our creativity extends into making high end wood framed art bikes. Very functional art. Very demanding of woodworking skills to achieve. And musical instruments including a line of snare drum shells that couldn't exist without us. We are the solid wood benders for Drum Workshop for the last 20 years. And we have made all the solid bentwood chair arms for the iconic mid century modern Cherner Chair for 20 years. That's thousands of drum shells and 10s of thousands of chair arms. Very challenging and rewarding to make these.

We recently finished an Orca sculpture from bent white oak for Tacoma Parks at Owens Beach. We recently built a curved trellis interior for a restaurant in Bellevue. We get noticed by some top architects and designers for our unique and thoughtful radius wood work that others find impossible to build, or wouldn't know where to start.

Apply with an introductory letter, and resume. Feel free to share images of your creative work if you have some. Pay is DOE but untrained production assistants are going to be in the $20+ range to start, with rapid increases to about $25 in the first year.
