The National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center (NACC) serves as the data, communication, and collaboration coordinating center for the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers (ADRC) Program. NACC is currently funded by more than $58M in grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and is home to one of the largest (48,600+ participants), oldest, and most powerful Alzheimer’s datasets. Our extensive database of rich, longitudinal, standardized clinical and neuropathological data was built in collaboration with more than 42 ADRCs across the US over the past 23+ years. NACC is driving major innovations to modernize data infrastructure (collection, integration, storage, and sharing) and build interoperability with other NIA-funded repositories to transform and advance Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementia (AD/ADRD) research and discovery. NACC is expanding its database to integrate electronic health records, Medicare claims, digital biomarkers, and digital neuropathology data, as well as additional genetic, biospecimen, and standard imaging (MRI and PET) metadata. Additionally, NACC is developing a novel data search and visualization portal to make all ADRC data streams readily searchable and accessible to the international research community. This work will open the door to new discoveries in AD/ADRD, improve our understanding of the disease, and enable the development of better early disease detection, personalized medicine, and more impactful therapeutics. NACC is part of the Department of Epidemiology within UW’s School of Public Health.NACC is organized into five teams: 1) technology team, 2) project team, 3) research team, 4) grants and finance team and 5) communications team. NACC has been funded by NIA since 1999 and is based at the University of Washington, Department of Epidemiology.POSITION PURPOSE This role will require a Technical Project Manager who is technically proficient, an effective communicator, and able to operate independently. The Technical Project Manager works with internal teams and external stakeholders to define requirements, determine milestones, facilitate coordination, track progress, and ensure timely delivery of applications and research engineering deliverables. The Technical Project Manager provides diplomatic and timely communication in an agile work environment with repetitive planning and delivery cycles.The Technical Project Manager is responsible for developing novel and innovative projects for new functionality provided by NACC to national ADRCs. This position will be managing high-impact, high-volume, mission critical cross-functional projects involving members of the Technology Team, Research Team, Grants and Finance teams, and external project contacts, including members of the Technology Steering Committees, vendors such as Flywheel, AWS, and others while working to advance key strategic projects including the new NACC Data Platform, Data Front Door and advanced research cohort selection tool. This position entails managing complex project logistics with a steadfast focus on the critical details of deliverables to meet deadlines effectively. The Technical Project Manager is responsible for ensuring timely and clear communication between teams, including those with varying skill sets and backgrounds to ensure project success. Most importantly, this position carries out their responsibilities with a high degree of autonomy, accuracy, timeliness, and awareness to help set priorities and identify potential problems to find solutions that keep the project progressing on tight timelines. This position has full autonomy to make decisions regarding the management of Technology programs related to the advanced technical projects, including, by not limited to, the NACC Data Front Door, Cohort Selection Tool, and NACC Data Platform.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Project Planning and Execution (60%)
Develop novel and innovative projects for completely new data functionality provided by NACC including an Alzheimer’s Research Cohort Selection Tool that will be embedded in the redesigned NACC Data Front Door.
Design and manage up to 15 new projects spanning across 4 teams. The purpose of these teams will be to develop innovative approaches to creating and maintaining the Data Front Door that will house ADRC data.
Develop and implement new policies and procedures that ensure the Alzheimer’s Research Cohort Selection Tool has the necessary supporting infrastructure, both for the development and ongoing support within NACC and in collaboration with ADRCs.
Attain a deep understanding of the software integral to NACC's data systems and how it maps to specific research objectives. Utilize this knowledge to drive research outcomes and system improvements.
Convert complex research outcomes from a diverse set of clients into clear, actionable development requirements. Ensure these requirements align with overall project goals and stakeholder needs.
Develop and maintain a high-level understanding of agile software development approaches to support the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), and how they relate to the work of NACC’s Tech team.
Manage the development and management of comprehensive project workflows by strategically collaborating with key team leads to define, communicate, implement, and validate critical requirements and dependencies. Ensure the timely and successful delivery of advanced technical functionalities for the new NACC Data Platform, Data Front Door, and Cohort Selection Tools.
Lead complex project workflows across NACC teams and key external stakeholders, including Flywheel, AWS, and Leaf. Define, strategize, and manage project deliverables across multiple organizations, ensuring alignment and integration of efforts to achieve overarching project goals.
Detail and document complex analytic processes using Critical Path Method (CPM) through the creation of flowcharts, requirements documentation, and other relevant materials.
Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Statements of Work (SoW) that include project charters and dashboards to effectively illustrate progress, identify bottlenecks, and balance resources across the strategic projects mentioned above. Maintain Project evaluation and review technique (PERT) chart to track decision and task list, monitor project progress, and proactively address challenges to ensure the achievement of project goal.
Lead mission-critical activities such as gathering and analysis of requirements for the team's technical products from diverse stakeholders and scheduling Sprint tasks to complete work on time.
Utilize triple constraints approach to develop and oversee comprehensive work plans for engineers, leveraging in-depth knowledge of technical dependencies and infrastructure to implement requirements effectively.
Manage and communicate with relevant teams to scope, implement, and lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) to test technical requirements and dependencies, ensuring seamless product delivery within deadlines.
Conduct thorough risk assessments for projects, evaluating trade-offs across potential deployment strategy options to optimize outcomes.
Act as a primary point of contact, bridging communication between technical and non-technical staff to facilitate project success including defining user interface and user experience (UI/UX) options and making appropriate recommendations.
Serve as the principal liaison between NACC teams and external stakeholders, including the Electronic Document Capture Workgroup and Technology Steering Committee, ensuring clear communication of project status, progress, and challenges
Collaborate closely with NACC leadership and team members to ensure the effective utilization of expertise, meeting project deliverables within specified timelines, budget constraints, and quality standards.
Produce detailed summaries, roadmaps, user flows, wireframes, and prototypes as needed to support various projects and facilitate stakeholder understanding.
Provide strategic project management support for new projects and initiatives, including the development and documentation of scope, timelines, resources, agendas, meeting facilitation, and status reporting.Project Leadership (20%)
Design and implement strategies that Increase the visibility and impact of the ADRC program, which is critical to ADRC impact and growth.
Strategically navigate and collaborate across supervisory structures to ensure high-priority tasks are identified and executed efficiently, aligning with organizational goals. Lead coordination and of tasks across a multidisciplinary team of engineers and non-technical staff. Continuously evaluate progress on deliverables to ensure alignment with project timelines and objectives.
Coach and mentor team members on project management tools and techniques, providing guidance, coaching, and support on project team roles to facilitate project team success.
Champion and facilitate effective collaboration between the team and other groups within NACC, driving cross-organizational teamwork and synergy.
Lead the preparation and management of activities to deliver NACC’s Strategic Technical Roadmap meeting agendas, presentations, and other essential resources for project committees. Ensure meetings are productive and aligned with project objectives.
Manage and regulate access to externally shared resources within NACC’s SharePoint drive. Enhance external collaboration by streamlining access for projects, committees, and other stakeholders by creating dashboards and data visualizations within available software tools such as Smartsheet and SharePoint.
Manage and maintain vendor relationships including tracking and management of priorities within the NACC Data Platform’s technical landscape, forecasting capacity needs and auditing professional services reports.Technical Application Learning (10%)
Lead the adoption of key internal strategic initiatives by developing, promoting, and operationalizing departmental innovations.
Standardize project planning methodologies across the entire NACC Project Portfolio to ensure consistency and efficiency.
Master existing Smartsheet, Trello, Asana and Github project management software used across various projects and provide strategic recommendations for leveraging additional tools to enhance project execution and collaboration.
Analyze, manage, and enhance operational processes related to the NACC Data Platform and Data Front Door projects. Focus on maximizing efficiency, streamlining processes, and implementing best practices within a highly integrated, cloud-hosted database.
Work directly with faculty and staff to develop and implement smooth and efficient processes and procedures to support the achievement of project objectives and NACC’s goals.
Optimize (how) operations and implement automated systems where appropriate; including updating automated quality-control and data validation technologies, including within Flywheel and REDCap with automated workflows, standardized processes, templates to streamline data collection, reviewing and editing communications (website or otherwise), improving business operations practices to save time and promote a collaborative environment.Other Duties (10%)
Manage event logistics for assigned projects and assist with operational support including technology, meeting coordination, drafting agendas and other duties as needed.
Lead efforts that bring efficiency to our portfolio of products over time while maintaining data expectations.
Other operational and project support duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, business management, journalism, communication, computer science, or related field.
Minimum 4 years' experience leading cross-functional teams to deliver projects with multiple dependencies and constraints. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Experience with multiple Project Management software including Asana, Smartsheet, Trello, Jira, and Confluence
Experience with data management tools such as SQL and Oracle.
Experience with the software development lifecycle, including Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid methodologies.
Advanced experience with technical project documentation including Statements of Work, Requirements and Analysis, Risk Assessments, Critical Path Project Plans, Gap Analysis, Bug Tracking and Support Ticketing software.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills – must be able to work well with a diversity of personalities and forge effective partnerships.
Strong project-management skills and the ability to multitask to meet internally and externally imposed deadlines.
Self-motivated, resourceful, and proactive.
Ability to communicate effectively and establish credibility with technical and non-technical stakeholders including executive staff.
