About the Position:

The Director of Operations and Outreach (half-time position) manages daily operations of SEA Discovery Center, leads outreach efforts for the center and ensures consistent on-going operation of the facility. This position also has primary responsibility for meeting annual revenue targets achieved through facility rentals, programming, fundraising and successful grant applications. This position will be required to work evenings and weekends on occasion. The position will be based in Poulsbo and requires the ability to respond to emergencies on site within 45 minutes. The director role is anticipated to remain a permanent half-time position.

SEA Discovery Center is a public aquarium located in Poulsbo, WA and is a self-sustaining program of Western Washington University. The Center’s facilities include a 3-story main building (footprint 24,000 sq. ft.) with fresh and saltwater aquarium exhibits, classrooms, and theater, outdoor grounds and parking lot, and floating boathouse classroom. The Center inspires lifelong learning and a deeper connection to the marine environment through public aquarium exhibits, school field trips, educational programs, a vibrant volunteer program, and environmental stewardship projects involving the community. Annually, more than 25,000 people visit the aquarium or participate in an educational program at SEA.

Required Qualifications:

Associate degree and 3+ years of documented success in a fast-paced position responsible for revenue generation. This experience may include tourism, hospitality management, fundraising, sales or similar. Additional work experience may substitute for the associate degree.

Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Supervisory experience

Proven ability to take initiative and achieve results under challenging circumstances

Demonstrated ability to create lasting relationships managed well over time

Understanding of lean operating procedures and a continuous improvement mindset

Experience conveying program/product/service information to the public, or public speaking experience

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to think creatively and respond to problems in a unique way

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or higher in a field relevant to the needs of the position; this may include but is not limited to business, hospitality management, sales, non-profit management, communications

Experience with event planning and management

Experience working with volunteers

Additional Requirements/Conditions of Employment

A valid driver’s license and ability to travel.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as dictated by program needs

Ability to respond to emergencies on site within 45 minutes

Salary: Salary range is $29,286.50 - $37,421.50 commensurate with experience; includes an excellent benefits package.
