Project Manager & Environmental Technician

Washington, Bellingham
Aplica ya

Dear reader,

I am sure this is going to come across as filler. You probably will think this is disingenuous. You are going to think this is just company propaganda. I am sorry to say that our mission is our number one priority. I am afraid that we are willing to sacrifice things that other people don’t, to achieve that mission. To us, sustainability means integrating the economy, society, and environment with exceptional stewardship, both within the company and in our external operation. Our mission is to Make Sustainability Possible, and we have been doing it since 1982.

We do land use, as well as environmental consulting. Most of our work is in Whatcom County although we regularly work across Washington state. We often hire people from outside the industry. We are a small, family-owned and operated, and growing sustainable land development firm.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Project Manager & Environmental Technician oversees the wetland delineation and data acquisition process, coordinating meetings, scheduling fieldwork, and ensuring compliance with client and jurisdictional requirements while also conducting hands-on fieldwork. This role involves collecting data on vegetation, soils, and hydrology, managing post-field data uploads, and ensuring accurate documentation for reporting. They act as the central liaison, sharing client information and driving project timelines, while delivering detailed technical insights from the field. This dual position requires balancing strategic oversight with meticulous field execution to meet regulatory standards. Their efforts ensure seamless project completion, from planning to final reporting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Proven Coordination and Communication Skills: Experience managing projects or teams, ensuring timely task completion and clear stakeholder updates.

2. Practical Problem-Solving in Dynamic Settings: Track record of adapting quickly in unpredictable environments like fieldwork or logistics.

3. Detail-Oriented with Action Focus: History of producing accurate work (e.g., reports, data logs) under deadlines without stalling progress.

4. Tech and Data Comfort: Familiarity with tools like GIS, tablets, or cloud systems, or the ability to learn them fast (basic Office/Google Earth skills suffice).

5.Answer YES to the Following Self Selection Interview Question:

You probably will wonder if people take this question seriously. I imagine this will be uncomfortable for some. I am going to ask you to imagine a tragic situation and think about how you would act. Here is the prompt:

“Imagine there is a freshly newborn baby that was recently born at a small county hospital far from civilization. Tragically the baby is having complications from birth and needs to be on a respirator to survive the night, but the power is out for some reason and the only way for the respirator to work is to run an old diesel generator. Because of how the hospital building was built, that old leaky generator will need to be placed inside of, as well as exhausted directly into, a highly acclaimed and protected world heritage site for wilderness and wetlands.”

Would you run the generator?

6. Fast Learning and Curiosity: Ability to rapidly grasp new tools and concepts (e.g., Ecobot, hydric soils) through self-directed learning.

AT TIMES, BE ABLE TO:

- Be on your feet for 8 + hours at a time

- Navigate thick underbrush, including black berries, for 8 + hours at a time

- Navigate over and through downed forestry as well as in dense woods 8 + hours at a time

- Dig several holes about 12-24” deep 4" in diameter

- Run a weed whacker

IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE EXPERIENCE:

1. Managing Projects or Teams in High-Pressure Settings: Coordinating tasks, timelines, and people to meet deadlines—like organizing a multi-step process (think fieldwork prep or event logistics) where quick decisions kept things on track.

2. Working Hands-On in Unpredictable Environments: Solving problems on the fly in outdoor or dynamic situations—such as adapting to weather changes during a site job, troubleshooting tech failures, or navigating rough terrain with limited tools.

3. Producing Detailed Work While Moving Fast: Documenting complex info accurately under time constraints—like compiling field notes, drafting reports, or organizing data dumps—without getting bogged down in perfectionism.

4. Using Tech to Get Things Done: Working with tools like GIS, tablets, or cloud systems to collect and manage data, or showing the knack to learn them quickly—think Google Earth for site mapping or basic Excel for tracking tasks.

5. Learning New Systems or Skills Independently: Picking up tools, workflows, or concepts without hand-holding—maybe mastering a new software for data logging, researching local regulations, or teaching themselves a process under a tight deadline.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinate Project Timelines and Teams: Plan and schedule key activities—like meetings, fieldwork, and data reviews—ensuring all steps align with deadlines; act as the central point for team updates and client communication.

2. Execute and Oversee Fieldwork: Conduct hands-on field tasks, such as collecting vegetation, soil, and hydrology data using tools like Ecobot or tablets, while ensuring paired fieldwork runs smoothly and safely.

3. Manage Data Collection and Documentation: Organize, scan, and upload field data—including notes, maps, and photos—into systems like SharePoint or QField, maintaining accuracy and accessibility for reporting.

4. Drive Problem-Solving in Real Time: Address challenges during fieldwork or planning—like tech glitches or unexpected site conditions—by adapting quickly and making decisions that keep the project on track.

5. Prepare and Review Reports: Compile and refine deliverables, such as reports or critical areas assessments, ensuring compliance with jurisdictional codes and reflecting field findings accurately.
