Job Summary:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate care and support to individuals with mental health and intellectual disability disorders. The DSP assists clients in achieving their personal goals, enhancing their quality of life, and promoting independence in a safe and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

      1.    Client Care and Support:

           Assist clients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, and medication management.

           Provide emotional support and encouragement to clients.

           Support clients in developing and maintaining social relationships.

      2.    Program Implementation:

           Implement individualized care plans and behavioral support plans.

           Assist clients in participating in community activities and social integration.

           Encourage clients to engage in therapeutic and recreational activities.

      3.    Health and Safety:

           Monitor clients’ physical and mental health and report any changes to the appropriate healthcare professionals.

           Ensure a safe and clean living environment for clients.

           Follow all safety protocols and emergency procedures.

      4.    Documentation and Reporting:

           Maintain accurate and timely records of client progress, activities, and incidents.

           Report any concerns or incidents to the Program Manager/Supervisor.

      5.    Training and Development:

           Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.

           Stay informed about best practices in caring for individuals with mental health and intellectual disabilities.

      6.    Collaboration:

           Work collaboratively with other DSPs, healthcare professionals, and family members to provide holistic care.

           Attend and contribute to team meetings and case reviews.

Qualifications:

           High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in human services or related field preferred.

           Experience working with individuals with mental health and intellectual disability disorders is highly desirable. But is not a necessity, employer will train you.

           Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with clients, families, and team members.

           Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle stressful situations with patience and empathy.

           Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required depending on the specific job duties.

Physical Requirements:

           Capacity to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment:

           Work is typically performed in residential or community settings.

           DSPs may be exposed to challenging behaviors and must be prepared to handle such situations professionally.
