Join a caring workplace that proudly celebrates uniqueness, authenticity, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of our residents.General Services Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 city government facilities including: City Hall, Public Safety Building (Jail), Norfolk Consolidated Courts Complex, entertainment venues such as the Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, Attucks Theater, the Virginia Zoo; a cruise terminal, all police and fire stations, recreation centers; pools and numerous city office buildings. The Division is staffed with 96 employees responsible for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC, elevators, roofing, moves and relocations of city employees, finance, and administrative functions.The department of General Services is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor I for the Facility Maintenance Division to manage the daily operations and needs within Nauticus, the Zoo or the Seven Venues. . This includes staff supervision, overseeing contractors, scheduling, facility maintenance and security as well as ensuring maintenance/repair concerns are addressed.Essential Functions

Manages the daily activities of a crew by coordinating work assignments with upcoming events and maintenance needs, scheduling facility repairs with staff and vendors, and ensuring jobs are completed in a professional and timely manner.

Verifies preventative maintenance and testing is scheduled and completed as planned.

Performs inspections and prepares reports

Follows the City’s Procurement Policy/Guidelines when requesting quotes from vendors/contractors, submitting paperwork for Purchase Orders (PO), and using vendor contracts to have work completed.

Utilizes a work order management application to assign work, monitor work orders for repairs and planned maintenance, and track expenses.

Maintains contracts by preparing specifications, overseeing price agreements, scheduling work, and ensuring that work is performed correctly.

Acts as liaison between customer and contractor

Ensures work follows outlined specifications

Inspects finished jobs

Reviews/Approves invoices for payment

Demonstrates ability to effectively supervise subordinates and work in a team environment.

Interviews applicants

Plans and assigns work schedules

Trains staff to use equipment

Approves payable time and makes corrections to timesheets when necessary

Manages leave requests by ensuring the leave will not negatively impact or disrupt shop work or productivity Monitors employee leave accrual and ensures they are provided opportunities to utilize the leave

Completes yearly performance reviews

Supplies guidance, training, counseling and feedback in areas where improvement is needed

Provides Chief Operating Engineer with input concerning corrective action when needed

Ensures employees are compliant with required training

Follows check off list for all new employees

Disseminates information to employees.

Addresses concerns and suggestions of staff.

Performs maintenance on buildings, grounds and equipment by maintaining and repairing power tools and vehicles, repairing or replacing HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, appliances and equipment, planning, designing and building additions to buildings. All other duties as assigned.Education/ExperienceRequired:

Three years of experience as a Maintenance Technician or Supervisor.

Six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.

Preferred:

Technical courses on HVAC and Mechanical.

Five years of experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing commercial HVAC systems.

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday 7:00AM – 3:30PM, rotating shifts may be required

This position is designated as Essential and may be required to report to work during City closures due to inclement weather and other emergencies.

Signing Bonus:

This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.

Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
