Job Description

Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute is a 72-bed state psychiatric hospital. Currently, about one-third of our patient population is forensically involved.

We are seeking a licensed clinical psychologist or a resident in clinical and forensic psychology. As a staff psychologist (or prior to licensure, a psychology associate) for inpatients with serious and persistent mental illness, the employee will provide a full range of psychological services, including the following : serve as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team;

assess individuals’ psychological stability and needs; lead in the formulation of meaningful treatment plans; provide group, family, and individual therapies;

develop and supervise behavioral interventions; conduct and interpret psychological testing and write practical, user-friendly reports;

conduct forensic mental health evaluations and write thorough reports for courts and state forensic mental health boards;

provide psychological consultation and education to hospital staff; and participate in program development. Clinical supervision to meet residency requirements is available, and study time for EPPP is supported.

Training and supervision in forensic psychology (evaluation of competency to stand trial, provision of services to restore competency to stand trial, evaluation of mental status at time of offense, evaluation and treatment of individuals acquitted by reason of insanity) will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications or in clinical / counseling psychology from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and ability to attain eligibility for Virginia licensure within one year of hiring is required.

Also required : significant experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and with personality disorders;

strong psychological assessment skills, including experience with a range of standard psychological tests; experience conducting individual, group, and family psychotherapy and psychoeducation;

demonstrated crisis management skills; strong written and oral communication skills; experience developing and maintaining positive relationships within a multi-disciplinary environment;

familiarity with principles of the recovery model and the stages of change; familiarity with DSM-5.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the assessment and treatment of forensically involved mental health clients.
