The Department of Safety and Security at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a newly created Public Safety Technology Specialist position. This position is part of a team that is responsible for the administration and support of enterprise technology infrastructure and various technology systems utilized by UVA. The Public Safety Technology Specialist provides technical support and administration for various specialized systems utilized by the Department of Safety and Security. They often perform duties with considerable independence but must also work as part of a larger collaborative team of DSS, ITS and Security Vendors. This is a highly engaging role that requires critical thinking, thought leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and a strong customer-service mindset.What you will do:
- Provides application and technology support to users of the DSS managed Access Control Systems, Alarm Management System, and other various applications.
- Maintain, monitor and ensure the integrity of key applications and server infrastructure including but not limited to conducting end user set-up, adding and deleting users, password management, carrying out routine system maintenance, system upgrades, file updates, interfaces, etc.
- Act as a liaison with other technical support staff, vendors and employees as needed. Provides support regarding software problems, updates, fixes, new releases, and change requests. Works in close coordination with various technology support vendors.
- Interface and coordinate with service providers and vendors, including supervising work of vendor support personnel and contractors.
- Maintain system database integrity, and make recommendations for projects, system performance, future growth and expansions.
- Collaborate with InfoSec and ITS to plan and implement security measures to protect technology systems and data. This includes the regular review and remediation of security vulnerabilities and threats and assisting third party vendors in providing network security services, audits, and assessments.
- Actively monitor change requests, project queues, and ticketing system to document work and facilitate communications with end users, project managers, and all key players.
- Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including updates to disaster recovery and business continuity documentation annually or as changes occur.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or similar field of study plus three (3) years of related work experience. Equivalent combination of related education, experience, certification, and training may also be considered.
- Ability to evaluate, develop and implement infrastructure system upgrades and enhancements.
- Ability to research, evaluate and test new IT technologies, trends, and solutions.
- Ability to be self-managed and a self-starter and take ownership of the work assigned and deliver results timely, reliably, and correctly.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing about technical subjects to non-technical users in a way they can easily understand
- Experience with database management and creation
- Knowledge of :
- LAN/WAN, VLAN, VPN and internet technologies
- Wireless networks, e.g. Cisco/Meraki, Cradle Point, Sierra
- Shared storage environments
- Active Directory and Group Policy
- Must understand network security best practices and procedures
- Solid understanding of disaster recovery and contingency planning
