The San Antonio Express-News is the third-largest newspaper in Texas, with two digital platforms - a free website, MySA.com, and a subscriber site, ExpressNews.com. Subscriptions to ExpressNews.com have more than tripled since 2018. The Express-News shares a Statehouse bureau in Austin and a Washington bureau with its sister paper, the Houston Chronicle. The parent company, Hearst, offers competitive benefits and numerous training and career growth opportunities. It is making significant investments in its newspapers, including the Express-News.
San Antonio has a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a City of Gastronomy for its food culture (Margaritas! Schnitzel! Mesquite and tacos and menudoand you get the idea). It's a fascinating minority-majority city and one of the oldest in the country - 303 years old! It gets hot here, but that's what AC is for, right?
This Fall, we'll be moving into a brand-spanking-new building downtown. We offer flexible work from home (for many roles) and we're a pretty fun group in Features, regularly winning awards for our food and features stories.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Edit reporters' stories, which includes editing the online presentation: writing online/social headlines, embedding photos as appropriate, editing photo cutlines and photo galleries.
- Assign stories to reporters.
- Help reporters brainstorm stories.
- Create budgets for print sections and assign stories to pages.
- Work with the digital team to plan for ideal online publishing times, presentations, headlines, and special buildouts.
Competencies/Critical Skills:
- Have a strongly developed sense of storytelling and a relentless drive to make each story the best version of that story it can be
- Be well versed in AP style
- Have a sharp eye for catching spelling errors, grammar errors, and inaccuracies and be able to fix those problems in stories
- Have great organization skills to keep track of tasks, story budgets and to meet deadlines throughout the day
- Be comfortable working closely with reporters to help craft stories in front-end editing before stories are reporting and writing, as well as after stories come in and get edited
Experience, Qualifications, Technical Requirements, Education
- Have at least 1 year of editing experience in a daily newsroom required
- Have at least 5 years of daily journalism experience required
- Be well versed in AP style required
- Have a background in arts and entertainment writing and/or editing preferred
- Have some knowledge of Spanish is preferred
- Have some knowledge of the South Texas region is preferred
