Position Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and safety-minded Laborer/Operator to perform underground utility installation . This position involves operating mini and mid-sized excavators, as well as performing related manual labor, to trench, place, and backfill conduit systems in accordance with engineered plans and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will have experience in excavation around existing utilities and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate mini and mid-sized excavators to dig trenches for underground utilities, ensuring accuracy and minimal disturbance to surrounding areas.
- Perform precise excavation in close proximity to existing utilities and structures.
- Install PVC, HDPE, or other conduit types according to specifications, including proper alignment, spacing, depth, and bend radius.
- Use hand tools and power tools to cut, glue, join, and secure conduit sections.
- Backfill trenches using excavators and compactors to meet compaction and grade requirements.
- Load, unload, and stage materials and equipment safely on-site.
- Follow all utility locate procedures, including potholing, to verify location and depth of existing utilities.
- Conduct daily pre-use inspections on excavation equipment, report defects, and perform basic maintenance.
- Comply with all company, OSHA, and local safety rules, including the use of PPE and trench safety protocols.
- Maintain clear communication with crew members and supervision regarding hazards, changes, and progress.
- Complete job paperwork, time records, and safety checklists accurately.
Minimum Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (CDL preferred but not required).
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of experience operating mini and/or mid-sized excavators.
- Knowledge of safe excavation practices, utility color codes, and job site safety procedures.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs. and work in varying outdoor conditions.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Zero tolerance for drugs, alcohol, or impairment on the job.
- Adherence to excavator operation safety protocols.
- Compliance with trench safety standards.
- Immediate reporting of damaged utilities, property, or safety incidents.
- Maintain professional conduct toward customers, the public, and team members.
This position is part-time with the potential to transition into full-time employment based on performance and company needs.
