The Police Cadet must complete the approved TCOLE basic police academy and pass the State of Texas police licensing exam within three (3) attempts.Responsibilities:
Attends and completes an approved TCOLE basic police training academy and the West Texas A&M University Police Department orientation course, which requires operating a university vehicle.
Participates in intensive classroom instruction programs and practical exercises.
Passes the State of Texas police licensing exam within three (3) attempts
Works a schedule as assigned by the West Texas A&M University Police Department and be willing to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
Participates and completes a West Texas A&M University Police Department field training course upon successful graduation from Academy.
Maintains satisfactory level of computer knowledge for necessary reporting and training
Maintains 100% compliance with timely completion of required System, University, and job-specific online training courses.
Displays tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for criticism of duty performance and supports administrative policy.
Other duties may be assigned.
Necessary Qualifications:
High school diploma or has passed a general educational development (GED) test indicating high school graduation level or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Applicant must complete the basic police academy and pass the required State of Texas police licensing exam with three (3) attempts.
Must have a State of Texas class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain with 30 days of employment and be able to be an approved driver to TAMUS.
Be a United States Citizen; must be in excellent physical health and stamina; must pass a physical and psychological exam; pass a vision test of 20/40-20/100 with glasses or 20/100-20/200 corrected with contact lenses, correction must be to 20/30 in both eyes; must successfully pass a complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history; able to meet required physical challenges consistent with a police officer with state and university police agencies; reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions; must be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; have been honorably discharged from the US Military, if served; must not be on court ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class C Misdemeanor; must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense above the grade of Class C within the last five years; must never have been convicted at any time of a felony offense; must have a good driving record, with no more than three moving violations within the last three years; must never have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as defined ty the Federal Gun Control Act; must be able to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends; have strong interpersonal and organizational skills; must meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) 217.1
Preferred Qualifications:
30 college hours from an accredited college or university; minimum of three (3) years of active duty in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (documentation required).
Able to qualify with department firearms after graduation from academy.
