Wind, hail, roof trial lawyer (Remote work is OK)

Texas, Austin
Aplica ya

Austin litigation firm is looking for the right trial lawyer (who is already licensed in Texas) to work primarily on wind-hail-tornado roofing lawsuits on the insurer's side. We defend suits brought by homeowners and commercial building owners. We also get other kinds of insurance cases where bad faith claims and attorneys fees are the primary drivers. Our clients like to try cases that cannot be settled reasonably. You will get courtroom and trial experience.

The job would be a breath of fresh air for someone looking to escape rigid rules and/or difficult people. We do not have committees or oppressive oversight. You will not have to babysit another lawyer, but will work collaboratively with others on first party cases. We have a congenial group of lawyers who share work, take depositions for each other, and cover hearings when a colleague is in trial, overbooked or on vacation. You will have autonomy, as well as support and mentoring when needed.

Many of our cases are in federal court, where deadlines are set in stone and attention to detail is paramount. So this is not a good fit for "big picture" lawyers who don't like focusing on details. There will be initial case evaluations to draft, discovery to send out (and answer), depositions to take and defend, motions practice when a summary judgment or other motion is appropriate, and mediations. Most depositions and mediations are on Zoom. The ideal candidate will also write well (several of our lawyers were judicial clerks), think strategically and have an appreciation for how some cases can be won on motions practice.

We offer flexibility in when you work and where. Most of us work from home. If you want to be off the clock when children get home or to drive to after-school events, that’s fine with us. Our focus is on excellence in taking care of our clients’ needs, not micromanaging anyone’s schedule. We focus on making our clients’ jobs easier – by getting them the reports and information they need – which drives more business.

A motivated attorney with at least a few years of relevant experience, and who is good at billing time, should make over $150,000 (and more if desired), plus profit-sharing bonuses typically once or twice a year. You can make more by billing more. If you work 65 hours the week leading up to a trial, you will be paid for 65 hours, not 40. But we do not have a minimum number of hours that must be billed. We keep track of our time with an easy-to-use timekeeping app called LeanLaw, which has a phone app as well as a desktop version.

While full-time is preferred, we will consider part-time too if your experience indicates that you could help us with our caseload on a part-time basis. We have hired new moms who wanted 20-30 hours on average per week, and go-getters who wanted to bill a lot of time. Our philosophy is that we can attract the best talent by being flexible.

Most of our cases are in Austin and surrounding counties. You don’t have to live in Austin, but when in-person appearances are required, you would need to be able to be there, travelling at your own expense.

A formal resume is not needed if you prefer to respond with an email describing your education, work experience, and suitability for the job as described.

Thanks for considering us. And yeah, we like dogs.
