Job Description

We are looking for an experienced tax professional to work as part of a team to manage our global tax footprint. This is an exciting opportunity for you to be part of the evolution of our tax function. Reporting to the Director, Tax based in Toronto, with adotted line to the regional Director, Tax based in Hong Kong, you will lead and manage tax strategies and activities to support enterprise-wide priorities and initiatives. You will play a key internal operations role, working closely with business partners and the senior tax team to provide strong tax support and execution to ensure that enterprise tax risk and compliance obligations are managed appropriately. Role-specific Accountabilities:

  • Be part of the leadership team, managing the day-to-day tax operations for Asia Pacific and Europe, including CPP Investments office entities, acting as a liaison between the tax department and internal services groups
  • Manage tax strategy, planning and execution for enterprise-wide and department-specific initiatives and developments, working directly with department leadership to help the organization achieve business objectives
  • Be a trusted internal partner that provides strong tax operational and compliance advice on day-to-day matters, including acquisition and disposition activities, ensuring that tax risks and CPP Investment specific issues are clearly understood by stakeholders
  • Manage advisors, the outsourcing of tax return preparation, and tax account review to ensure that CPP Investments meets its global compliance obligations within acceptable risk tolerances and on a timely basis
  • Proactively and effectively manage tax audits
  • Oversee and manage permanent establishment and global mobility issues from a corporate tax perspective, working closely with internal partners and external advisors
  • Keep abreast of changes in tax laws and ensure appropriate integration into tax filings and positions
  • Identify process opportunities and drive change management in a tax capacity for a growing global organization
  • Maintain and contribute to the development of the tax framework
  • Drive enterprise-wide tax education, positioning yourself and the team as a valued and strategic business resource

Qualifications

  • Hong Kong Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or equivalent professional designation
  • Extensive and progressive experience with tax in the Asia Pacific region; experience in international tax would be an asset
  • Strong English communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders and manage outside tax advisors located in multiple jurisdictions. Chinese language skills would be a plus
  • A manager that can motivate and lead a group to excellence, attracting and retaining a high-performing team
  • A leader, who can think critically to develop compelling strategies and plans, yet is also excited to roll-up-your-sleeves to get things done
  • A demonstrated ability to think broadly about tax information, think through problems, assess a variety of factors and recommend solutions
  • Someone with strong business literacy and an understanding of emerging workplace communication and collaboration tools and technology
  • A continuous learning mindset with a desire to stay on top of business trends and tax technical changes
  • Motivated self-started with the ability to work independently with moderate to minimal supervision
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Flexibility and adaptability, including occasional travel (to Toronto, Canada) and off-hours support relating to transactions, projects, and team members
