Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island The Lead Unix System Administrator is responsible for systems software, assuring that all security, auditing, patching, and restart/recovery functions are properly operating. Effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software, and related infrastructure of the Computing and Information Services Department. Monitor performance and provide capacity planning information. Identify areas where improvements are desirable and suggest improvements. Provide assistance and training to other System Administrators and other CIS technical staff. Evaluate vendor-supplied software and make buy/build recommendations. Resolve particularly complex or critical technical problems. Function as a project manager as required. Manage day-to-day operations, troubleshoot problems, install, and patch operating systems and other infrastructure software. Participate in and development of DevOpsSec. Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience with Linux systems administration
  • Problem resolution and troubleshooting skills; e.g. dump reading, traces, etc
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize activities
  • In depth knowledge of Linux, including Red Hat (preferred), Ubuntu and Debian
  • Knowledge of programming languages, including some of the following: Shell scripting (bash,ksh,etc), Perl, Python, API integration, etc.
  • Use of source control systems such as Git
  • Use of configuration management tools, including Puppet (preferred), Ansible, and Jenkins
  • Use of log correlation software, such as Sumologic
  • Some experience with Hypervisors (VMWare, Hyper-V, or KVM) is required
  • Some experience working with containers (Docker, Kubernetes, Singularity) is preferred
  • Experience working in a DevOpsSec environment
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment
Successful completion of a criminal background check and education verification required. This position is also subject to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) requirements.
