We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Designer to join our Mechanical and Electrical Design Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). In this role, you will utilize skill sets consisting of intermediate level abilities relative to concepts, practices, and procedures of Drafting and 3-D Modeling. Candidates with an Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology are typically ideally suited for these positions.ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.You will:Assist research engineering programs needing mechanical design support by collaborating with R&D engineers and engineering support specialistsParticipate in meetings and design reviewsCollaborate to address design, material, and component needs; assist in the resolution of issuesUtilize accepted standards, methods, and techniques to create intermediate 3D solid models for fabricated parts, assemblies, and Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) partsCreate 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts/assemblies using accepted standards, methods, and techniques; may also create schematic/bills of material (BOM) documentsPerform Service Center tasks related to documentation control, copying, archiving (.stp and .xt), and database entryUtilize ARL's Project Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (Teamcenter) to properly archive and perform configuration management of all design documentationMaintain all required compliance training related to business systems, safety, and securityProvide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staffThis position will be filled at multiple levels, depending upon the candidate's education and experience. Minimally requires an Associate's Degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for the Professional Level. Additional experience and/or experience required for higher level positions.Required skills/experience areas include:Basic/intermediate research utilizing CAD software3D solid models for fabricated parts and assembliesCommercial Off the Shelf (COTS) partsPast success using 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts and assemblies using accepted standards, methods and techniquesFamiliarity with schematic and bills of material (BOM) documentsMaterial selection, tolerance analysis, and/or manufacturing analysisDocumentation control, copying, filing, and database entryPreferred skills/experience areas include:Associate's Degree or higher in Engineering TechnologySiemens NXASME Y14.5Proficiency with Microsoft Office and AdobeActive government security clearanceThis position is required to be 100% on-site, but options may exist for a hybrid work from office/work from home scenario depending upon research requirements.ARL at Penn State is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and serves as a University center of excellence in defense science, systems, a d technologies with a focus in naval missions and related areas.You will be subject to a government security investigation, and you must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
