The PHS Lead Instructor position will directly support the Workforce Development Team and the Branching Up training program, which is a partnership with PHS and Temple University. This role will require up to 40 hours each week, in-person, at the George Hill Correctional Facility. The Lead Instructor will supervise one Assistant Instructor and will provide onsite leadership to two cohorts of up to 17 participants per year for a total of 30 trainees annually.

PHS will be returning to our previous work of providing training and job readiness skills to individuals currently incarcerated through the Delaware County George Hill Correctional Facility. This role will work closely with other team support, such as Case Management and Job Readiness coaches from Temple University. Participants will train with PHS staff for 12 weeks while incarcerated, as they prepare for careers once released. Following successful completion of our curriculum and post-release, trainees will then be offered an 8-week training.

Possess a minimum of 5 years of project management within horticultural roles

Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience

Provide day-to-day leadership of training program at George Hill Correctional Facility

Strong project management skills and the ability to think creatively to meet project deliverables

Prepare trainees for proficiency in: landscaping techniques, tree tending basics and general land care skills

Lead 8-week internship with up to 17 trainees to prepare for potential job after completing training

Provide high quality curriculum delivery to up to 15-17 trainees per cohort (2-3 cohorts/year)

Supervise all trainee onboarding with PHS Workforce & HR teams

Supervise one Assistant Instructor (also onsite at George Hill)

Supervise the tracking of daily attendance & submit weekly to Director of Workforce Development for stipend distribution

Act as onsite point person for prison, PHS & Temple personnel

Participate in weekly/monthly/quarterly meetings with PHS, Temple University & Delaware County programming staff.

Build relationships with local landscaping and landcare companies for on-the-job training and employment opportunities for program graduates

Assist Program Director with compliance to contracts, reporting and resolving partner questions and concerns, as needed.

Ability to maintain and reconcile receipts and project budget, with the support of the Director of Workforce Development and the WFD Contracts & Compliance Program Manager

Make recommendations for OTJ phase and coordinate start date/location with trainee and partnering companies and coordinate placements

Make program supply purchases, as instructed by Director

Key Skills

Possess 5 years of experience in landscaping, landcare and/or tree tending skills, such as: operating & maintaining various mowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, pole saws, tree plantings, etc.

Teaching experience required (+3 years preferred)

Provide trauma informed leadership to staff and trainees

Understanding of the needs of Returning Citizens and how job readiness contributes to reduced rates of recidivism

Supervisory experience

Valid driver’s license and ability to pass PHS driver’s clearance
