LGBTQ+ / Disability-friendly Home-help Aid and Assistant Needed

I'm looking to build a team of 2 or 3 assistants that work well together. I have disabilities that make maintaining my home difficult. Payment is through the state. Hiring process includes some state mandated training. I manage my own care, the hiring process and schedule.

I need 2 more dependable people that together have the skills for the following: cleaning, organizing, basic house maintenance, cooking, driving, errands and developing and maintaining systems and planning. Right now I especially need someone that's good at setting up and maintaining systems and who's good at organization of objects.

I strive to be a socially just employer. Immigrants and D/deaf individuals are welcome to apply—I know some ASL. You do not have to have all of the skills listed below. In fact, knowing your skills, weaknesses, and boundaries is essential.

SKILL AREAS

1) Good at setting up systems.

Help my team of assistants run well by creating and maintaining systems that help all of us keep track of: objects, responsibilities and schedules. For example, help set up a virtual calendar where people write down their scheduled times and track hours worked. Also set up a system for making sure assistants don't forget to put important things in the right place at the end of the shift.

2) Meal planning, cooking, baking, and shopping.

You would be shopping with me mostly, but need skills like picking out good produce, comparison shopping etc. I will lead the planning and cooking, but need a sous chef and help with planning and shopping. I need advice without judgment of my methods and budgeting. Bonus points for clever ways to have meals ready to go in the fridge that just need heating. Being neurodiverse and having eating disorders, I need people to not try to life coach me, just support my existing process.

3) Sewing - mainly minor things like hemming clothing

4) Help remembering, organizing, and executing things, such as:

- Returning things to Amazon and

other retailers

- Ordering and picking up meds on

schedule

- Finding new homes for things,

remembering those locations, and

putting them back

5) Experience helping set up a household for wheelchair accessibility A+

6) Queer and trans positive.

I'm a sex and kink educator and a queer person. You must be able to understand the difference between sex positive and flirtatious. I am not at all interested in sexual connections with employees.

7) Driving to/from appointments including some nights and weekends.

Doctors appointments, choir rehearsal, physical therapy, photoshoots, meetings with clients, swimming, performances and other activities. Drivers need to alert and sober while working, and comfortable with driving at night and in big cities including New York. The person that takes me to swim would need to be able to help me change after swimming, and help me climb up the ladder by supporting an arm and applying a little leverage.

8) Cleaning and organizing:

- Cleaning kitchen and dishes, including items used to cook meat

- Decluttering and organizing living

space

- Looking for things

- Cleaning bathroom

-unpacking (moved a few months ago,

still getting settled)

-helping me locate and obtain free or

cheap furniture

- Sorting through and storing boxes

- Laundry

- Changing kitty litter

- Changing sheets and chuck pads

9) Nonjudgmental help with clothing and cutting hair.

I don’t currently need a lot of help with personal hygiene or clothing, but I need help with my shoes and sometimes with belts, buttons, tighter shirts, tank tops, or camisoles. I wear a large variety of men’s and women’s clothing. I need help using clippers on the back of my hair. Bonus points, if you want to help me learn a few new makeup tricks.

10) Minor household repairs and handy projects.

Tasks that require use of drills, screwdrivers, and other tools, such as tightening a screw on a dryer door, hanging shelves, putting together furniture, installing small appliances, or repairing laminate flooring. Helping me build some simple shelves and a table from scratch would be exciting, but not required.

11) Linear and big picture thinking.

Help me and the team think through and coordinate logistics and schedule planning for the week.

12) Attention to detail

Need a detail-oriented person to help with organizing and minutia, such as making sure there’s no lint on photographs before they are sent out.

-

Required of all parties:

Scent and perfume-free

Able to lift around 50 pounds

Disability-, queer-, and trans-friendly and knowledgeable

Follow my lead even if you don’t 100% understand why I need things the way I do.

Tactful, proactive, and clear communicator who takes direction well, but can also think ahead and make suggestions.

Know your own skills and weaknesses. Give me a heads up when you’ve committed to something you can’t execute or if you encounter difficulty with a task or project.

Understand that I am in control of my life even though I need physical assistance and some help with planning and linear thinking.

-

Starting pay: $15.45 per hour

Schedule:

Usually 10+ hours per week spread over 2-3 days, so most days will be about 6 hours each. Days and shifts can vary from week to week to fit both our schedules. I will start each assistant at about 8 hours per week. Depending on your experience, skill set, and which tasks you want to take on, hours may be increased to fulfill certain roles.

I need at least one night owl to round out the team. I’m looking for people who are available for weekend evenings/nights shifts. Most work will start after 4:00 pm.

As stated above, please respond to this ad by indicating your best and weakest skills of those listed. And tell me a bit about yourself and why you'd be good for the position.

Thanks!
