This position reports to their classroom Guide and the Program Director as part of the Administration team and shares responsibility with all staff members for creating a culture of accountability and for taking ownership of the results we achieve as an educational institution. This is a full-time position that includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following responsibilities:
Assist children as needed and as directed by the Guide, but in a manner that supports children’s independence.
Position yourself in the classroom according to the Guide’s direction, generally maintaining a calm, non-distracting presence.
Protect the integrity of lessons given by the Guide by redirecting children and preventing interruptions.
Aid in maintaining an orderly, harmonious, and safe classroom environment and culture.
Foster children’s intellectual and personal growth and independence.
Aid in bathroom supervision and foster children’s independent toileting, giving the children maximum independence while ensuring safety.
LUNCH AND OUTDOOR PLAY
Supervise and assist with lunch according to the Guide’s direction.
Ensure safe travel to and from the outdoor play environment.
Supervise and support safe, appropriate behavior and equipment usage on the playground.
Facilitate appropriate conflict resolution between children.
Communicate with the Guide and administration about any playground issues or concerns.
MAINTAINING THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Support the children to participate in care of the environment.
Clean and maintain order in the classroom each day after the children have left. Spray and wipe furniture, clean floor, tidy shelves, and put away laundry.
Make and maintain materials as directed by the Guide.
Communicate observed material and environmental needs to the Lead Guide and administration.
Restock materials and supplies as needed.
RECORD-KEEPING
Maintain records of child accidents or injuries.
Record daily attendance.
Help maintain a list of needed class supplies, in consultation with the Guide.
COMMUNICATION
Communicate effectively with the Lead Guide, Assistants, and Administration as needed. Utilize thoughtful, solution-oriented communication.
Follow directions from the Lead Assistant in the absence of the Lead Guide.
Maintain appropriate professionalism in communications with families. Refer all inquiries about a child’s behavior, along with all comments and concerns expressed by parents, to the Guide or administration.
GENERAL BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
Support children’s independent functioning whenever possible.
Maintain a professional, neat, and clean appearance.
Maintain a friendly, professional and positive attitude in relationships with the children, families, and fellow staff members.
Model Grace & Courtesy in your communications and movements.
Be punctual and present in the classroom during your regularly scheduled hours, and all other hours as assigned.
Maintain required professional qualifications, including:
Current CPR/1st Aid certification
Current Food Handlers certification
Current registration in the Central Background Registry
Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN) training
Intro to Child Care Health and Safety (ICCHS) training
Prevention is Better than Treatment training
Any required hours of professional development
DAYS/HOURS OF WORK
Toddler program hours are 7:30am to 5:30pm on school days as specified in the School Calendar. Your work hours are specified on your Status Form, are determined in conjunction with the Guide and Operations Manager, and are subject to scheduling changes. On days when other toddler staff are absent, the Assistant may be asked to work longer hours. The Assistant can be expected to work any shift between 7:30am-5:30pm.
During classroom preparation, takedown, and in-service days, you will work your normal number of hours, as directed to the Guide, subject to scheduling changes.
Attend all whole staff meetings.
Attend all community events to which you are assigned on the event expectations sheet.
At least two, or more as needed, evenings/days of childcare for school events/conference days.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or otherwise communicate, hear and observe the children and employees and their surroundings.
The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit; use hands and feet; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision requirements include the ability to see at close range.
Fine hand manipulation.
Strong, focused mental acuity.
Emotional fortitude and ability to regulate emotions and maintain appropriate reactions and responses to emergencies and non-emergency situations that may arise in the workplace.
Patient and calm demeanor to provide a nurturing learning and working environment.
