Position: part-time, year-round
Description: Rusted Gate Farm is a non-profit farm. This position is based at our small farm location in Central Point and is a part of a small team that maintains a year-round market veggie garden and U-pick flower garden, manages a laying flock (and soon a few goats), and irrigates a small pasture. The produce and fruit we grow is direct marketed at our own farm store, located just up the road, and as such, requires frequent and efficient communication with farm store staff.
Duties: This position requires equipment operation including walk-behind tiller, tractor, mower, weed-eater, backpack blower, power tools, hand tools, etc. Outdoor work is expected during all seasons including harvest and post-harvest duties, weeding, sowing, transplanting, irrigation, up-potting, trellising, small livestock care, organizational duties, and equipment and building maintenance.
Qualifications: Position requires farming and/or gardening experience. This position entails repetitive physical work including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing. This individual is required to maintain their physical needs by dressing appropriately for the weather, properly hydrating, and practicing good ergonomics. Ability to drive a truck and trailer and effectively back a trailer is a bonus. The right candidate will have experience with and be efficient using garden tools such as hula hoes, fork and spade, rakes, tine weeders, etc. Construction and mechanical skills are a plus.
The applicant must be capable of physical labor in inclement weather and frequent heavy lifting. They must also possess computer skills and effective phone and in-person communication skills. The individual must be able to complete tasks in a timely manner, while unsupervised at times.
Starting hourly rate: $18-20/hour, DOE. During the growing season, 40 hours per week and during winter months, 20-25 hours per week. Some weekends and special events are required.
Must have a valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record and reliable transportation. All new employees have a 60-day probationary period.
