Position Summary:

The Flight Nurse is a vital member of our air medical team, responsible for delivering safe and effective patient care during transport via fixed-wing aircraft. This role involves providing advanced medical support to critically ill or injured patients while in flight, ensuring their stability and comfort throughout the journey. The Flight Nurse works closely with physicians, paramedics, and flight crews to maintain high standards of care and safety. This position requires strong clinical expertise and a solid understanding of aviation medicine.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

Ensure the safe and effective transport of critically ill or injured patients in a fixed-wing aircraft.

Provide advanced medical care during air transport, utilizing critical care protocols and advanced interventions as necessary.

Collaborate closely with physicians, paramedics, flight crews, and ground medical teams to provide the best possible care for patients.

Oversee the preparation, stabilization, and transfer of patients, ensuring that all medical equipment and medications are available, functional, and correctly administered during the flight.

Ensure patient care is delivered according to established protocols, policies, and best practices.

Quality Improvement:

Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and program performance.

Analyze patient care data, flight logs, and incident reports to identify trends, safety concerns, and areas for improvement.

Conduct regular assessments of program activities, including patient care, equipment usage, and medical protocols.

Training and Development:

Participate in training programs to maintain certifications and ensure readiness for all types of medical transport scenarios.

Assist in training and mentoring junior medical staff, contributing to their professional development.

Engage in continuous learning to stay up-to-date with the latest medical protocols, equipment, and aviation medicine

Safety:

Prioritize the safety of patients, crew, and aircraft at all times by adhering to established safety protocols and aviation regulations.

Ensure that all flights are compliant with state and federal regulations, as well as industry best practices for air medical transport.

Participate in regular safety drills and training exercises to ensure readiness for emergency situations, including flight diversions and in-flight medical emergencies.

Monitor the operational environment for potential hazards and take proactive measures to mitigate risks.

Collaboration:

Work closely with the Medical Director/Medical Program Manager to ensure optimal patient care and smooth operations.

Coordinate with external healthcare providers, emergency medical services (EMS), and hospital teams to ensure timely and appropriate patient care transitions.

Communicate effectively with all team members, including pilots, medical staff, and company leadership.

Qualifications:

Education and Licensure:

A current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.

Experience and Certifications:

Previous experience as a flight nurse or within an air medical program is highly desirable.

Monitor patient conditions during transport, utilizing advanced medical knowledge and skills.

Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.

Advanced certifications in critical care, such as Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) is required.

Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advance Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is mandatory.

Knowledge and training in aviation medicine, including flight physiology and patient care considerations during flight, is highly preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

Proven leadership experience with strong communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.

Ability to manage a team of medical professionals, providing guidance, support, and mentorship.

Ability to work under pressure, demonstrating exceptional problem-solving skills and clinical judgment.

In-depth understanding of air medical transport protocols, patient care, and safety standards.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Knowledge of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards, including FAA, DOT, and state/federal regulations.
