Title: Outdoor Field Instructor
Supervisor: Camp Operations Director
Dates: April 26th – June 7th
Compensation : $144-160/day (4-5 days/week)
POSITION SUMMARY:
YMCA Camp DeBoer is seeking applicants who want to make a positive impact on youth in our area
by creating positive, nurturing relationships with children. Outdoor school enhances students’
connection to self, community, and nature. We strive for every student to leave with scientific
skills, ecological understanding, self-confidence, curiosity to discover more, and a sense of place in
their world.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a strong interest and background in environmental education or related field.
Prior experience working with youth, particularly outside.
Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and a commitment to serve
youth.
Communicate openly with supervisor, support and connect with students, behave as an
appropriate positive role model in all outdoor school activities.
Flexibility to support students in person or remotely, facilitating distance learning activities
with support.
Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
Must maintain current CPR certification.
Be able to lift or carry objects or children.
Required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time. Including
but not limited to balance or climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Deliver prescribed lessons in an engaging manner that promotes learning and inquiry into
the natural world and environment.
Supervise a group of children while promoting a positive environment that fosters fun,
safety, and our YMCA values, whilst uphold, model and enforce camp policies, personnel
policies, and code of conduct.
Ensure safety of all participants at all times and maintain participant confidentiality.
Lead and participate in activities for groups of students while adhering to YMCA program
standards and policies and procedures.
Use equitable approaches to engage all students in land-based education.
Facilitate, teach or support students to participate in discussions, activities, stories, games
and/or songs.
Demonstrate in word and action the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and
responsibility and a commitment to the Y’s mission.
Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents,
children, and other staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
