The City of Springfield is seeking to fill a Mechanic position in the Development & Public Works Operations Division. The Mechanic position performs the more complex skilled, technical, and semi-skilled tasks to maintain, service, repair, and upfit and restore City vehicles and mechanical equipment and component parts. The City will supply all necessary tools required for the job.

The City has approximately 350 fleet vehicles/equipment with the majority of mechanical services being performed on police vehicles, sedans and SUVs. The City also has approximately 15 large pieces of equipment that require maintenance and repair.

Mechanic III: This is the Mechanic II job description with the advanced/ lead skills and ASE Certified.

Education / Experience:

The City will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications. Such a way to meet minimum qualifications could include:

Associate’s degree or two-year technical certificate in mechanics or related field, and;

0-2 years of experience performing routine preventative maintenance such as oils changes, tire repair, transmission repairs, brakes, and air conditioning (Mechanic I)

3-5 years of progressively responsible experience related to the area of mechanics including the use of vehicle lift systems, complex fleet vehicles, and equipment (Mechanic II)

5 or more years of specialized mechanic experience to encompass all Mechanic II work, and ASE Certified (Mechanic III)

Preferences may be given based on qualifications and experience:

EPA 609 Technician Certification to maintain, service, and repair air conditioners

ASE Certifications

Use of web-based service manuals

Licenses and Certifications:

A valid Oregon driver’s license at time of appointment

Oregon CDL Class B Endorsement is required within 6 months of appointment

Possession of or ability to obtain security certification (CJIS) within 30 days of hire and maintain certifications throughout the course of employment.

The City will provide the necessary training to obtain the Oregon CDL Class B Endorsement and CJIS clearance.

The mechanic position will have access to Police vehicles and equipment and must obtain CJIS certification. Please note that in order to acquire CJIS certification, the individual cannot have any felony convictions, and any other criminal record is at the discretion of the certifying agency. CJIS requires finger printing as well.

Physical Requirements:

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects. Further definition of the physical requirements of the position can be found in a job task analysis. Position requires the ability to lift objects that could weigh a maximum of 80 pounds.

Employees with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Selection Process:

The selection process will include: interviews, reference checks, background investigation; as well as, post-offer (conditional offer) medical certification, drug and alcohol screening, and physical abilities test.

Interview Process:

Top candidates will be invited to interview.
