Technical Project Manager

Oregon, Corvallis/albany, 97330 Corvallis/albany USA

Emberex is looking for a technical project manager to join our team. We need someone who can jump in and get up to speed quickly - learn what we do and how we do it, and then help us improve in all the ways that make sense.

We’re looking for someone to do a lot more than just asking everyone for “percent complete” and updating a gantt chart. You’ll be working as part of a team, and to some degree, the specifics of your role will depend on what the team needs and what you bring to the table. Most likely, you’ll be doing stuff like this:

Planning projects, coordinating tasks and priorities

Managing budgets

Communicating with devs, designers, qa analysts, product owners, clients, and more

Writing tickets

Running team meetings

We’re calling it a “Technical” Project Manager because you’ll need to be able to communicate clearly with technical people, who are often using technical terminology to talk about technical stuff. For example, you’ll have lots of conversations with people who write code or find bugs or make web apps beautiful. And you’ll need to understand those conversations well enough that you can capture the most relevant stuff when you’re writing tickets and understand the impact of tasks and priorities.

Our process is based on all the things we’ve learned over years of developing software. The underlying philosophy is based on a few simple principles:

Every team is different, every project is different - the process should be tailored to the actual needs of the project and the team.

Don’t solve problems you don’t have - something that worked really well at your last job or on a different team might not be a good fit for this one.

Just enough - have just enough process to keep things running smoothly, and update the process when there are new problems to solve. Useless stuff just makes everybody’s life worse.

Communication is key - a lot of problems can be solved with clear communication at the appropriate time. The people in charge should facilitate communication, but in the end, everyone on the team is responsible for asking questions, sharing knowledge, and bringing things up as needed.

We build web and mobile applications for a bunch of really great clients, including some of the nation’s top researchers, educators, and high profile state and federal projects. We love working with people who have devoted their lives to making the world a better place.

Our team includes developers, digital designers, and QA analysts. We use tools that make sense for the job - ticket tracking systems (e.g. Linear, Shortcut, ClickUp), code repositories (GitHub), design tools (Figma), and more.

We work really hard to keep our team and our clients happy - once you get comfortable, we hope you’ll introduce new ideas that help us to do that even better.

We have an office in downtown Eugene, and some of us work there some of the time. But almost everybody lives close enough to go into the office whenever it makes sense. And even though we’ve gotten pretty good at the hybrid/remote thing, there’s really no substitute for being in a room with someone and talking face to face. Also, we have a break room full of snacks, a game room full of games, and sometimes even a dog or two.

In addition to an hourly wage, we offer benefits including health, vision and dental insurance, paid time off, a yearly bonus, matching 401k, and more. And someday we’d like to start having in-office massages again - there’s just so much to look forward to!
