About the job:

Performs general landscape, maintenance, repair on park grounds, facilities, and trails. The Parks Maintenance Worker performs buildings, grounds, gardening and maintenance duties to care for parks and recreation open spaces, facilities and equipment.

A day in the life:

The information provided below encompasses the typical duties and capabilities linked with this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Maintains, repairs, renovates, and constructs park grounds and trails.

Assists with landscaping, horticultural, and forestry projects.

Assists with noxious weed management.

Assist with the application of pesticides and fertilizers.

Maintains and repairs landscaped areas, including turf, trees, shrubs and irrigation.

Operates mowers, tractors, sweepers, and other mid-sized motorized equipment.

Operates hand and powered tools.

Prepares and maintains the District’s sport fields for practice and game play, including dragging, harrowing, and watering playing surfaces; marking fields. Identifies and eliminates safety hazards.

Perform snow removal and ice control duties.

Assists with new construction and remodeling in such areas as carpentry, painting, concrete work, excavation, wildlife habitat and upland natural areas.

Assists with irrigation system installation, repair and maintenance.

Assists with set up and operation of special events.

Communicates openly and constructively with supervisor and district employees to enable efficient decision-making and positive morale.

Maintains equipment in clean and safe condition; operate equipment safely at all times.

Promotes safe conditions in all park facilities.

Provides assistance and guidance to public park users as needed.

Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:

40-hour work week may include weekend & holiday shifts.

Typical workday: 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM

Requirements

What you'll need for success:

Strong Knowledge of:

Principles, practices and methods used in horticulture, park maintenance repair and construction, forestry, and trail construction;

Equipment and practices involved in park grounds, wetlands, landscape or building maintenance;

Safety rules and identification of safety hazards; and

Maintenance and safe operation of powered equipment and hand tools.

Skill and Ability to:

Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail or in person to successfully complete assigned projects;

Work independently while also able to work cooperatively with others;

Safely operate powered equipment and hand tools;

Effectively understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Exercise initiative and good judgment; and

Establish and maintain effective, cooperative and respectful working relationships with all contacts.

What we're looking for:

Education, Experience, and Training:

High School diploma or equivalent; AND

Some experience in park maintenance, horticulture and landscaping, irrigation technology, or construction preferred; OR

Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.

License and Certifications:

Possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.

Some positions may require possession of or ability to obtain within one year of hire a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license.

Supervision Received:

Works under the supervision of the Park Services Manager and receives direction from Park Maintenance Worker 2, and Park Services Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

Limited direction is a responsibility of this position when on-site leadership and guidance of part-time and seasonal personnel is needed.

Working Conditions:

The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.

Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.

Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.

Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.

Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.

Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, vibration and fumes.

Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching.

Occasional lifting, moving, dragging, pushing and carrying of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds unassisted).

Occasional crouching, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing or balancing.

May require working for emergency call-outs or snow removal during off duty hours including some holidays.
