The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.Scope of Position:Corning’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) is focused on aspects of manufacturing equipment across the following areas: Development/design, Industrialization, Procurement, Deployment, commissioning, and startup.This position is in the Fiber Capital Programs (FCP) department within the Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) and is focused on equipment deployment, commissioning, and startup. The position is for an Electrical/Controls Engineer to be a member of a project team and provide Electrical Engineering leadership in the building, installation, commissioning, and startup of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing systems in the optical fiber and cable division. PLC code and SCADA/HMI development is not the primary function of this position. Programming skills could be utilized as opportunities arise within FCP and potentially within other functions outside of FCP.Day to Day Responsibilities:
Provide electrical discipline leadership in the construction, test, installation, and debug of equipment systems at both domestic and international manufacturing sites.
Work closely with the Division Engineering and Operations groups to plan for suppling power for process equipment.
Learn & understand process & equipment functions in area of responsibility, including system analog and digital I/O requirements, control sequence logic, fail safe states and recovery sequences.
Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures.
Incorporate safety and risk analysis into equipment designs and installation methods adhering to Corning Safety Standards as well as international safety standards.
Assure quality and repeatability of processes and products.
Provide assistance in developing integrated industrial control systems for new manufacturing equipment and modification of existing equipment.
Work closely with the Technology Development, Manufacturing Engineering and Operations groups to industrialize and reduce cost of new equipment designs.
Assess condition and usability of existing equipment for fit and function with new installation plans.
Work with equipment vendors on build and acceptance of equipment.
Direct initial equipment set-up and debug up to the point of turnover to operations.
Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or product quality. Adhere to all corporate, business unit, and site guidelines.
Develop detailed process equipment installation plans and supervise contract trades groups during installation.
Develop and use mechanical and electrical start-up/debug checklists, drawings, and process equipment documentation, including directing technicians on creating and using the documentation.
Supervise and provide direction to direct and contract engineers and technicians, internal maintenance, and outside contract trades.
Conduct troubleshooting for equipment and process issues during installation and start-up phases, identify root cause and implement long-term corrective actions.
Train plant engineers, technicians, maintenance, and operations personnel on the manufacturing platform as part of the turnover to operations.
Travel Requirements:
Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. During the deployment phase of the project, travel may be full-time.
Design, Development and/or Deployment phases typically range from 3-9 months but can extend to 1+ years.
Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Newton, and Wilmington) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.
Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:
40hrs+ M-F, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.
Required Education:
BS Electrical Engineering or MS Electrical Engineering.
Required Years in area of experience:
5+ years manufacturing experience working with process and/or automation equipment.
Required Skills:
Knowledge of power systems for 480VAC and below.
Familiar with installation and operation of manufacturing equipment.
Interpret electrical drawings and schematics to aid in troubleshooting.
Determines and recommends best solution from a series of alternatives within plant guidelines.
Thoroughly carries out assignments to completion.
Translates engineering solutions to requirements, then further to process and/or equipment designs which deliver required performance criteria.
Works well with other disciplines (IT, Mechanical, and Process engineering) to fully understand manufacturing system functionality and design requirements.
Self-starter and able to work in team environment
Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and can adjust to changing priorities.
Desired Skills:
Equipment or software experience preferred: AutoCAD®, AutoCAD Electrical, Windows, MS Office suite including Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and Project. PLC and PC based systems, Beckhoff PLC / Motion Control, B&R PLC Control, A-B PLC / Motion Control, Automated equipment systems experience.
Knowledge of regulations applicable to area of expertise and works to ensure compliance (NEC, NFPA70, OSHA, ISO 13849, etc.).
Experience working on a manufacturing floor or construction environment, with a strong focus on job site safety and proactive safety approach.
Displays a bias for action in situations of uncertainty, addresses issues and problems proactively.
Effective communication and presentation skills.
Project management experience, including developing project scope, budgets, and schedules.
Knowledge of the Optical Fiber manufacturing process.
Technical skills for future assignments with other Corning Departments:
PLC code development to achieve desired operation/throughput of new and existing production equipment.
SCADA/HMI development.
PID control theory knowledge.
Electro/mechanical technical understanding.
This position does not support immigration sponsorship.The range for this position is $100,165.00 - $137,727.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
