Duke LifePoint combines Duke’s unparalleled expertise in clinical excellence and quality care with LifePoint's extensive resources and knowledge and experience operating community hospitals and healthcare organizations.Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including the supervision of respiratory therapy students. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check, and operate equipment. Respiratory Therapists assigned to the pulmonary functions lab, responsible for performing diagnostic cardiopulmonary evaluations and respiratory therapy treatments designed to care for patients with deficiencies and dysfunctions of the cardiopulmonary system. The Pulmonary function technologists primarily perform diagnostic tests. These tests can include spirometry, diffusion testing, lung volumes, airway resistance, respiratory muscle forces, bronchial provocation testing, assisting with bronchoscopy, CPX testing and other tests that a doctor orders. They must also be able to calibrate, clean and maintain diagnostic equipment and recognize when equipment malfunctions.Essential Functions: Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan of care. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.Adheres to respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices.Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment.Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about disease.Monitors, receives, stocks, and distributes respiratory care supplies.Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment, and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines.Attends high-risk C-Sections and high-risk deliveries to assist the physician with resuscitation of the newborn (must be able to function in the absence of physician support).Performs infant ventilation, including: assisting in intubation and tube securing, ventilation with neo puff, and ventilator initialization and monitoring (must be able to function in absence of physician support).Prepare shift assignment, assigns personnel, monitors workload to insure adequate coverage.Assists in orientation and training of new employees.Assists with peer interviews.Performs arterial blood gas sampling.Minimum EducationAssociate’s Degree (or equivalent technician program) in Respiratory Care required.Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Care preferred.Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.Certifications:Basic Life Support (BLS) requiredAdvanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (within 3 months of date of hire or transfer)Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (within 3 months of date of hire or transfer)NRP (within 3 months of date of hire or transfer)Handle with Care (within 3 months of hire or transfer)
