Position Summary The Accessioning Technician, under the direction of the Accessioning Supervisor, is accountable for ensuring that all specimens are accessioned accurately and on time. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe and professional environment, and to perform with confidence all aspects of the accessioning position, while following the established practices and procedures. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Read and understand the standard operating procedure manual (SOPM/SOP). Receive, accession, and aliquot specimens following procedures detailed in the SOP. Understand and apply the acceptance criteria for specimens and handle rejections and corrections. Properly complete chain-of-custody (COC) documents including (but not limited to) external Custody and Control Forms (CCF’s), Screening Aliquot COC’s, Specimen Internal COC’s, Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) Aliquot COC’s, and Long-Term Storage COC’s. Enter donor information (but not test results) into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS/LIS). Store specimens at appropriate temperatures for the durations specified in the SOP. Dispose of negative and non-negative specimens. Retrieve specimens from storage and aliquot for re-testing, properly completing all COC’s. Store all records, short-term and long-term, in an organized manner. Maintain security to the locked refrigerators/freezers to ensure secure storage of the specimens. Record daily temperatures for the refrigerators and freezers and immediately report problems to a supervisor (The Accessioning Technician is NOT responsible for refrigerators/freezers in the screening/confirmation laboratory area.). Prepare oral fluid specimens for screening and/or confirmation. Maintain supplies in the receiving/accessioning area sufficient to fulfill job duties. Cover specimen collection observation duties, as needed. Customer service with forensic and clinical clients. (The Accessioning Technician is to not provide customer service to donors or patients.) Position Qualifications Ability to concentrate and handle large, fluctuating volumes of work; and Strong computer literacy, keyboarding, and typing skills. Other Requirements Must be able to successfully pass pre-employment background check and successfully pass pre-employment drug screen. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must promote a spirit of team effort and involvement. Perform other duties, including cross training in other departments, as delegated by supervisor. Work closely with all members of the laboratory personnel. Must be flexible and available based on staffing requirements; weekends and holidays. Must demonstrate good organization, communication, and interpersonal skills; is able to manage concerns of patients and employees in a professional manner. Meet basic computer skills in Microsoft office with the ability to learn new software. Must be able to make decisions based on established procedures and exercise good judgment and seek Supervisor guidance when appropriate. Have an ability to work in a rapidly changing environment. Physical and Mental Requirements Regularly required to sit. Ability to momentarily lift and/or move up to 50lbs. Ability to effectively communicate and work with other lab personnel. Work Environment The work environment is in a highly regulated. Employees are expected to memorize key-codes and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to navigate the laboratory. Employees will be in close proximity to human fluid specimens and are expected to complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training.
