POSITION SUMMARY:Under the direction of a qualified physician, the Sonographer II will perform a variety of technical procedures in the application of non-ionizing high frequency ultrasound waves to humans for diagnostic purposes. Has ability to perform all technical procedures required for the ultrasonic assessment of OB/GYN patients. Must exercise a high degree of technical competence, accuracy and judgement. Has a sound knowledge of the terminology and common practices of modern ultrasound.SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor. All are overseen by the Director of the Ultrasound Department. Needs minimal supervision or direction to perform duties.INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT TYPICALLY USED:Operates ultrasound equipment such as linear array, annular array, curvilinear sector and trans-vaginal probes to scan pertinent anatomic area. Records images using digital imagers, thermal paper printers and video recorders. May operate ancillary devices as required for procedures. Operates computer terminal to generate reports.PATIENT CONTACT:Staff members of the Diagnostic Ultrasound Lab in the Department of OB/GYN will have contact with female patients between the ages of 10 and 100.TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The following will be completed in accordance with the laboratories procedural guidelines and policies:
Perform routine and specialized ultrasound studies related to Obstetrics and Gynecology. (70%)
Prepare patients for examinations and explain procedures to them prior to performing studies. Obtains complete patient history and documents this in patient’s computer file. (5%)
Assist in the sterile technique procedures such as amniocentesis, cyst aspirations, PUBS, and Chorionic Villi sampling. Responsible for proper labeling, handling and delivery of samples taken during these procedures. (5%)
Properly make permanent recordings of studies for patient’s files using digital imaging, video tapes and thermal printers. (2%)
Responsible for accuracy of information presented on computer generated reports and patient’s ultrasound files. (5%)
Responsible for promptly notifying the attending physician and accurately reporting findings in cases of pathology, abnormality or clinical significance. (2%)
Contributes to keeping the laboratory orderly and clean to assure a safe work environment. (1%)
Assist in the instruction of the RIT student interns, outside preceptors, residents and fellows rotating through the department. May be asked to provide in-services related to ultrasound to medical students. (5%)
Performs duties associated with individually assigned tasks in accordance with the policies documented for each task (ie: QA checks, supplies, preceptors, case files). (5%)
Read journals to keep abreast of new developments in diagnostic ultrasound. Attend conventions and symposiums (and pass along new information to staff). Obtain necessary continuing education credits to keep ARDMS registration current and valid. Encouraged to participate in the research and drafting of original articles.
Perform other duties related to the operation of the lab (may include filing, typing and paperwork) as specified by the Laboratory Supervisor and Department Director.
Technically, the Sonographer II will be able to:
Recognize the significance of all structures that are visualized at all times
Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and to recognize equipment limitations
Recognize a diagnostic vs incomplete scan and interpret any pathology that may be present; discuss findings with the PNC physician
ALSO:
Responsible for obtaining pertinent diagnostic laboratory test results for referring and PNC physicians which may be necessary for correlation with the ultrasound study.
Takes night and weekend call for one-week intervals as scheduled. Also takes call on assigned holidays.
Must maintain a thorough knowledge of equipment used with the laboratory. Monitors and reports quality, operating condition and failures to laboratory supervisor after thoroughly assessing and attempting to remedy situation.
Obtain follow-up on interesting cases and help to update teaching files with interesting cases scanned and/or videotaped.
Assist in ancillary lab duties such as scheduling patients, answering phones, printing reports and mail distribution when necessary.
Assist with reports and mail as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Uses initiative and independent judgement when necessary.
High standards of medical ethics with obvious empathy and respect towards patients.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and general public.
A 2- or 4-year college education leading to an Associate’s
or Bachelor’s degree in laboratory sciences and technical training closely related to this position;
or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
MUST be ARDMS registered or registry eligible in OB/GYN.
